Robust Energy Scheduling in Vehicle-to-Grid Networks
2017
The uncertainties brought by intermittent renewable generation and uncoordinated charging behaviors of EVs pose great challenges to the reliable operation of power systems, which motivates us to explore the integration of robust optimization with energy scheduling in V2G networks. In this article, we first introduce V2G robust energy scheduling problems and review the stateof- the art contributions from the perspectives of renewable energy integration, ancillary service provision, and proactive demand-side participation in the electricity market. Second, for each category of V2G applications, the corresponding problem formulations, robust solution concepts, and design approaches are describ…
Dynamic simulation model of a coal thermoelectric plant with a flue gas desulphurisation system
2006
Abstract In this paper a Dynamic Simulation Model has been used to present the likely responses of the electricity industries’ latest perturbations such as: changes in environmental regulations, international fuel market evolution, restriction on fuel supply and increase on fuel prices, liberalisation of the European Electricity Market, and the results of applying energy policies and official tools such as taxes and emission allowances. The case under study refers to the Teruel Power Plant, built after the 1970s oil crisis to ensure national electricity supply; burning domestically produced coal in order to ensure local mining activity. The Teruel Power Plant has made relevant investments i…
Effect of Pulsed Electric Field Pretreatment on Drying Kinetics, Color, and Texture of Parsnip and Carrot.
2018
The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of pulsed electric field (PEF) pretreatment on drying kinetics and on color and textural changes in sliced parsnip and carrot. Cell disintegration index measured in parsnips after PEF pretreatment significantly differed from the ones measured for carrots and, consequently, the reduction of the time needed to dry both samples to a final moisture content up to 5% (wet basis). The drying time of the PEF pretreated parsnip was reduced by up to 28% at 70 °C and by up to 21% at 60 °C in carrot, in comparison to untreated samples. The PEF pretreatment influenced the effective diffusivity of water into the samples going from 50 °C to 70 °C: in carrots…
Cogeneration from thermal treatment of selected municipal solid wastes. A stoichiometric model building for the case study on Palermo
2003
This paper aims to calculate the energetic and environmental effects of an integrated solid waste management system in Palermo, Italy. In particular, the thermal treatment of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) with energy recovery is assessed. The current characterization at the local scale is taken into account. Two different options of collection are taken into account: (1) unselected wastes; and (2) sorted collection, according to the current Italian regulation. Combustion process is analyzed and the following features are calculated: (1) stoichiometric content of air and air excess; and (2) temperature and enthalpy of flue gases. Energy recovery is performed in the hypothesis of Hirn cycle bot…
Leading the way toward fuel parity in photovoltaics: The utility-scale market in Sicily, Italy
2016
The global photovoltaic (PV) market has been growing exponentially since almost twenty years. This huge demand for photovoltaic systems has been mainly driven by public subsidies in the form of a variet y of national incentive schemes. However, in Countries where successful incentive schemes have been pioneered and are now – as planned - being brought to an end, the PV market is called to the challenge of surviving without any incentive to the end user. Grid and fuel-parity represent the keystone of this emerging new phase in the history of this renewable energy technology. In this paper we present a sensitivity analysis showing that in Sicily, Italy, the Levelized Cost of Energy from utili…
Functional linear regression with functional rensponse application to prediction of electricity consumption
2008
Functional linear regression model linking observations of a functional response variable with measurements of an explanatory functional variable is considered. The slope function is estimated with a tensor product splines. Some computational issues are addressed by means of a simulation study. This model serves to analyze a real data set concerning electricity consumption in Sardinia. The interest lies in predicting either incoming weekend or incoming weekdays consumption curves if actual weekdays consumption is known.
A method for detecting malfunctions in PV solar panels based on electricity production monitoring
2017
In this paper a new method is developed for automatically detecting outliers or faults in the solar energy production of identical sets (sister arrays) of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels. The method involves a two-stage unsupervised approach. In the first stage, "in control" energy production data are created by using outlier detection methods and functional principal component analysis in order to remove global and local outliers from the data set. In the second stage, control charts for the "in control" data are constructed using both a parametric method and three non-parametric methods. The control charts can be used to detect outliers or faults in the production data in real-time or at t…
Use of voltage gradient gel electrophoresis in apoptotic DNA analysis
2000
In this paper the use of voltage gradient gel electrophoresis (VGGE) in the electrophoretic analysis of apoptotic DNAs is described. The peculiarity of VGGE fractionation in enhancing DNA bands in the gel by reducing their thickness was used to obtain a rapid, more selective and higher-quality electrophoretic fractionation of apoptotic DNA with respect to conventional electrophoresis. The use of VGGE fractionations also allowed a reduced amount of DNA to be used to detect a characteristic apoptotic DNA ladder pattern, in a lower agarose gel concentration, with respect to conventional electrophoretic fractionation
Hydrogen bonded ferroelectric liquid crystal gels in freely suspended film geometry
2003
We study freely suspended films of smectic C* liquid crystalline gels by means of polarizing microscopy. The gel point of the system is determined from the suppression of flow in the films. The network of hydrogen bonds is mechanically fragile but stabilizes orientation patterns of the sample, in particular it stores the texture present during gelation. Electro-optical experiments are performed to study the dynamics of the sample reorientation under the influence of in-plane electric fields. Mesogen orientation and optical properties can be switched in electric fields of a few kV m−1. After removal of electric fields, the network restores the ‘frozen-in’ texture. This texture can be erased …
Improving energy efficiency of commercial buildings by Combined Heat Cooling and Power plants
2020
Abstract Commercial buildings play a key-role in the energy consumption of the building sectors. Recent statistics have shown that as the number of commercial buildings is continuously increasing, their effects on energy consumption are expected to grow. These buildings are characterized by high energy demand mainly due to lighting and HVAC requirements. Rooms of energy saving exist by considering that: (i) electricity demands and HVAC requirements occur simultaneously during the day and (ii) both demands are currently satisfied by using separate energy systems. It is apparent that the adoption of polygeneration systems could represent a valid solution to achieve energy savings. To this aim…
