ChemInform Abstract: Metal-Metal Bonding and Metallic Behavior in Some ABO2 Delafossites.

2010

We present results of ab initio band structure calculations on some ABO2 delafossite oxides that have both the A and B sites occupied by transition metals. This class of materials includes insulators as well as some of the most conducting oxides. The calculations have been performed in order to understand the nature of the metallic and insulating states and the extensive metal−metal bonding displayed by these materials. The effect of polytypism on the electronic structure is examined. Among the interesting aspects of the electronic structure of these materials are the contributions from both A and B atoms to states near the Fermi energy and the highly disperse nature of bands derived from t…

BacSr1−cTiO3 perovskite solid solutions: Thermodynamics from ab initio electronic structure calculations

2005

We suggest theoretical prediction for Ba"cSr"1"-"cTiO"3 perovskite solid solutions (BST) combining ab initio DFT/B3PW calculations and alloy thermodynamics. This approach is based on calculations of a series of ordered super-structures in Ba-Sr simple cubic sublattice immersed in the rest TiO"3 matrix. Although these structures are unstable with respect to the decomposition, the results of total energy calculations allow us to extract the necessary energy parameters and to calculate the phase diagram for the solid solutions (alloys). A novel approach applied to the BST system enables to predict that at T>400 K Ba and Sr atom distribution is random. But below this temperature at small c Ba a…

The first excited singlet state of s‐tetrazine: A theoretical analysis of some outstanding questions

1996

The equation‐of‐motion coupled cluster method for excited electronic states (EOMEE‐CC) is applied to study the structure and selected properties of the first excited singlet state of s‐tetrazine. Adiabatic S1←S0 excitation energies obtained with large basis sets containing up to 270 functions are uniformly somewhat above the experimental 0–0 value of 2.238 eV, but nevertheless are the most accurate calculations reported to date for this quantity. The equilibrium geometry of S1 predicted in this study is in excellent agreement with another high‐level calculation, and moreover is quantitatively consistent with both the intensity of vibrational progressions observed in absorption and measured …

Vibrations of a single adsorbed organic molecule: anharmonicity matters!

2010

Vibrational spectroscopy is a powerful tool to identify molecules and to characterise their chemical state. Inelastic electron tunnelling spectroscopy (IETS) combined with scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) allows the application of vibrational analysis to a single molecule. Up to now, IETS was restricted to small species due to the complexity of vibration spectra for larger molecules. We extend the horizon of IETS for both experiment and theory by measuring the STM-IETS spectra of mercaptopyridine adsorbed on the (111) surface of gold and comparing it to theoretical spectra. Such complex spectra with more than 20 lines can be reliably determined and computed leading to completely new ins…

Ab initio study of the electronic and atomic structure of the wolframite-type ZnWO4

2009

Abstract Ab initio quantum chemistry calculations of the structural and electronic properties of monoclinic wolframite-type ZnWO 4 crystal have been performed within the periodic linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) method using six different Hamiltonians, based on density functional theory (DFT) and hybrid Hartree-Fock-DFT theory. The obtained results for optimized structural parameters, band gap and partial density of states are compared with available experimental data, and the best agreement is observed for hybrid Hamiltonians. The calculations show that zinc tungstate is a wide band gap material, with the direct gap about 4.6 eV, whose valence band has largely O 2p character, w…

Ab initio modeling of copper adhesion on regular BaTiO3(001) surfaces

2005

Ab initio calculations have been performed for copper adsorption on a regular, defect-free TiO"2- and BaO-terminated (001) surfaces of a cubic BaTiO"3, using a posteriori HF-CC method as implemented into the CRYSTAL-03 computer code. To clarify the nature of the interfacial bonding, we use slab models of the Cu/BaTiO"3(001) interfaces with different one-side substrate coverages, varied from 1/8 monolayer (ML) up to 1/2 ML, over both TiO"2- and BaO-terminated surfaces. TiO"2 termination has been found to be energetically more favorable for the adsorption of copper atoms. In agreement with previous experimental and theoretical data, our calculations indicate essential contribution of atomic p…

Ground and excited state polarizabilities and dipole transition properties of benzene from coupled cluster response theory

1999

Abstract The electronic properties and transition properties have been investigated for the lowest singlet electronic states of benzene using coupled cluster response theory. The polarizabilities have been calculated for the ground state and the 1 1 B 2u , 1 1 B 1u 1 1 E 1u and 2 1 E 1u excited states. The dipole allowed transitions out of these states have also been calculated and discussed in the context of the calculated polarizabilities. Oscillator strengths and the second electronic moments of the charge distributions have been used to characterize and identify qualitative features of the individual states. The performance of coupled cluster singles (CCS), the recently proposed CC2 mod…

On the electronic structure of a dianion, a radical anion, and a neutral biradical (HB)11CCCC(BH)11 carborane dimer

2009

Abstract The electronic structure of a neutral, a radical anion, and a dianion carborane dimer connected via an acetylenic bridge unit (HB) 11 C C C C(BH) 11 is analyzed by quantum chemical methods. Geometries, relative stabilities, and singlet–triplet gaps are determined in the neutral and dianion species for the lowest-lying singlet and triplet states and for the doublet ground state in the radical anion. As for the recently studied biradical compounds derived from o -carborane, m -carborane and p -carborane [J. Chem. Theory Comput. 4 (2008) 1338] via double hydrogen abstraction, the neutral dimeric compound displays a biradical ground-state structure in which both singlet and triplet sta…

Theoretical Study on the Structures and Electronic Spectra of TCNE2−

2006

Investigations into the charge-separated states and electron-transfer transitions in tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) compiles have recently generated much interest. In this work we present theoretical calculations showing that the most stable structure of the dianion TCNE 2- has D 2d symmetry in vacuum as well as in the solvents dichloromethane and cicetonitrile. By means of the coupled cluster linear response, we compute the vertical electronic spectrum in both the gas phase and solution. The theoreitcal results, are compared to the experimental data and good agreement is achieved.
