Inflammatory and cytotoxic responses of an alveolar-capillary coculture model to silica nanoparticles: Comparison with conventional monocultures

2011

Abstract Background To date silica nanoparticles (SNPs) play an important role in modern technology and nanomedicine. SNPs are present in various materials (tyres, electrical and thermal insulation material, photovoltaic facilities). They are also used in products that are directly exposed to humans such as cosmetics or toothpaste. For that reason it is of great concern to evaluate the possible hazards of these engineered particles for human health. Attention should primarily be focussed on SNP effects on biological barriers. Accidentally released SNP could, for example, encounter the alveolar-capillary barrier by inhalation. In this study we examined the inflammatory and cytotoxic response…

The Risk, the Real, and the Impossibility of Life

2017

The discourse of the Matrix not only wakes up philosophy from the slumber they are, but reflects the rise of fears which are proper of a culture, that manipulates anxieties to fix policies otherwise would be rejected. Basically, Neo is subject to an ethical dilemma which means that we are free to make the decision to live in a fake without suffering or in “the real of the dessert” as Morpheus put it. At this extent, if technology is used to protect humankind, Matrix evinces under some circumstances, it can oppress human beings when they renounce to their “free-will”. This chapter not only explored the limitations of the society of risks within liberal thought but taking into consideration t…

SECONDARY SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ INTEREST IN SCIENCE SUBJECTS IN CONNECTION TO THE CHOICE OF PROFESSION

2019

One of the most important factors influencing the welfare of the society is the development of science and technology, which in turn depends on scientists and students' science literacy. The aim of the study was to investigate the interest of high school and university students in science subjects, their views on factors that raise interest in subjects and play a determining role in the choice of profession. The questionnaire of Riga secondary school and university students about their interest in science subjects in connection to the choice of their profession was carried out.  The results of the survey showed that the majority of university students are interested, or they have moderate i…

The essay reconstructs the origins of the Palermo assistance system before the Fifteenth-century hospital reform. Throu…

Chronic Poverty in European Mediterranean Countries

2013

This chapter investigates the characteristics of chronic poverty among youth in Southern European countries. These countries have the highest levels of poverty in Europe and welfare systems unable to smooth social inequalities effectively. The main aim of this chapter is to investigate on how long-lasting poor among the Mediterranean youth differs in socio-demographic and economic characteristics. The intensity of poverty over time is measured by a very recent longitudinal poverty index based on the rationale of cumulative hardship. We tested the effects of many covariates on the incidence and intensity of chronic poverty, controlling for main socio-demographic and economic characteristics,…

Changes in behavioural response of Mediterranean Seabass (Dicenthratus labrax L.) under different feeding distributions

2009

Captive-induced behavioural deviations may involve many aspects of fish behaviour such as swimming activity and enhancement of individual aggressiveness. We studied seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) behaviour as a function of manual and automatic feeding distribution modes. Under manual mode, the food is distributed over an extended area for a longer period, and its precise location is not always predictable, while with pneumatic automatic feeders, fish receive the same amount of resource, which is concentrated in the same surface area over a shorter period. We compared seabass behaviour under automatic and manual conditions collecting video image recordings before, during, and after feeding d…
