Spatial aggregation and resampling expansion of big surveys: An analysis of wage inequality
2020
Income inequality is becoming a growing concern, worldwide, with wage inequality being the root cause of its recent escalation. With the aim of adding to the knowledge on this subject, this paper focuses on the spatial dimension of the problem, an aspect which has received less attention in the literature. We identify the determinants of inequality in wage distribution in Spain at a provincial level using the microdata of the Structure of Earnings Survey (N = 216,769) and estimate their impact from a spatial perspective. Spatial computation of wage concentrations, however, reduces the sample size to just 52 observations, leading to model challenges. To overcome this problem, we adopt a supe…

This textbook covers the entire history of the construction of the State in France, from its medieval origins to the present day. Adopting both a thematic and chronological approach, it endeavors, for each chapter, to expose "the political state," in particular its values and their repercussions on its functioning, and "the administrative state," sometimes presented in the guise of "the administrative constitution of France".This dual approach, informed by the history of political, legal and economic ideas, reveals the ideological, constitutional and administrative foundations of our state, while measuring the evolving nature of its main defining criteria (population, territory, governmenta…

The determining factors of workers’ quality of employment and occupational health are many and different, including from those of a structural nature (productive sector, size of company, labour organization, type of contract) and contextual (economic cycle, normative regulation ), to those with an institutional dimension (system of labor relations, union participation, collective bargaining, Labor Inspection) and, even, cultural (business management model, preventive training programs and risk assessment). Regarding the influence of the first group of such factors (structural and contextual) on the evolution of occupational accidents, there is already important specialized literature and em…
Well‐being in European regions: Does government quality matter?
2020
This paper constructs a composite indicator of well‐being for 168 European regions with data from 10 well‐being domains. Regions are then ranked according to their respective levels of well‐being. The ranking reveals notable differences across European regions, which follow a marked spatial pattern. As a second contribution, the paper analyses the impact of the quality of government on well‐being. Results show a positive association robust to several specifications and scenarios. Moreover, the effects of quality of government on individual well‐being dimensions are identified, finding positive links with education, jobs, income, safety civic engagement, access to services, housing and commu…
The impact of health status and human capital formation on regional performance: Empirical evidence
2020
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the impact of health on growth, assuming that it is a fundamental component of the human capital of a region along with education. Various measures of population health status are used, together with a health index generated by principal component analysis. Potential endogeneity between health and growth is controlled for using instrumental variable regressions and dynamic panel data. The results show a positive effect of a change in health status on regional output and a negative effect of proxy variables for health limitations on regional performance. This corroborates the importance of investing in health along with education with the aim of improv…
