Changes in radiological protection and quality control in Spanish dental installations: 1996-2003.

2008

Introduction: The European Union has established specific directives concerning radiological protection which are obligatory for member States. In addition, all Spanish dental clinics with radiological equipment are required to have an annual quality control check. Objective: To analyze the effect of new European legislation on dental radiological practice in Spain and to determine whether it has resulted in lower doses being administered to patients. Material and Methods: A total of 10,171 official radiological quality control reports on Spanish dental clinics, covering 16 autonomous regions, were studied following the passing of Royal Decree 2071/1995 on quality criteria in radiodiagnosti…

A topological substructural approach for the prediction of P-glycoprotein substrates

2006

A topological substructural molecular design approach (TOPS-MODE) has been used to predict whether a given compound is a P-glycoprotein (P-gp) substrate or not. A linear discriminant model was developed to classify a data set of 163 compounds as substrates or nonsubstrates (91 substrates and 72 nonsubstrates). The final model fit the data with sensitivity of 82.42% and specificity of 79.17%, for a final accuracy of 80.98%. The model was validated through the use of an external validation set (40 compounds, 22 substrates and 18 nonsubstrates) with a 77.50% of prediction accuracy; fivefold full cross-validation (removing 40 compounds in each cycle, 80.50% of good prediction) and the predictio…

Photochemistry of Fluorinated Heterocyclic Compounds. An Expedient Route for the Synthesis of Fluorinated 1,3,4-Oxadiazoles and 1,2,4-Triazoles

2004

The photochemistry of some 3-N-alkylamino-5-perfluoroalkyl-1,2,4-oxadiazoles in the presence of nitrogen nucleophiles such as ammonia and primary and secondary aliphatic amines has been investigated. The primary photolytic intermediate from the cleavage of the ring O-N bond follows two distinct and competing pathways leading to (i). 5-perfluoroalkyl-1,3,4-oxadiazoles, through the ring contraction-ring expansion photoisomerization route favored by the presence of the base or (ii). 5-perfluoroalkyl-1,2,4-triazoles, through the intervention, as an internal nucleophile, of the exocyclic N-alkylamino moiety of the oxadiazole followed by the attack of the external nitrogen nucleophile and subsequ…

Fuzzy Mathematical Programming for Portfolio Management

2000

The classical portfolio selection problem was formulated by Markowitz in the 1950s as a quadratic programming problem in which the risk variance is minimized. Since then, many other models have been considered and their associated mathematical programming formulations can be viewed as dynamic, stochastic or static decision problems. In our opinion, the model formulation depends essentially on two factors: the data nature and the treatment given to the risk and return goals. In this communication, we consider several approaches to deal with the data uncertainty for different classical formulations of the portfolio problem. We make use of duality theory and fuzzy programming techniques to ana…

Requirement of Retinoic Acid Receptor Isotypes α, β, and γ during the Initial Steps of Neural Differentiation of PCC7 Cells

2005

Retinoic acid (RA) is indispensable for morphogenesis and differentiation of several tissues, including the nervous system. The requirement of the RA receptor (RAR) isotypes alpha, beta, and gamma and the putative role of retinoid X receptor-(RXR) signaling in RA-induced neural differentiation, was analyzed. For this compound-selective retinoids and the murine embryonal carcinoma cell line PCC7, a model system for RA-dependent neural differentiation was used. The present paper shows that proliferating PCC7 cells primarily express RXRalpha and RARalpha, lower levels of RXRbeta, and barely detectable amounts of RARbeta, RARgamma, and RXRgamma. At receptor-selective concentrations, only a RARa…

Mboat7 down-regulation by hyper-insulinemia induces fat accumulation in hepatocytes.

2020

Background: Naturally occurring variation in Membrane-bound O-acyltransferase domain-containing 7 (MBOAT7), encoding for an enzyme involved in phosphatidylinositol acyl-chain remodelling, has been associated with fatty liver and hepatic disorders. Here, we examined the relationship between hepatic Mboat7 down-regulation and fat accumulation. Methods: Hepatic MBOAT7 expression was surveyed in 119 obese individuals and in experimental models. MBOAT7 was acutely silenced by antisense oligonucleotides in C57Bl/6 mice, and by CRISPR/Cas9 in HepG2 hepatocytes. Findings: In obese individuals, hepatic MBOAT7 mRNA decreased from normal liver to steatohepatitis, independently of diabetes, inflammatio…

The four murine peroxisomal ABC-transporter genes differ in constitutive, inducible and developmental expression.

1999

Four ATP-binding cassette (ABC) half-transporters have been identified in mammalian peroxisomes: adrenoleukodystrophy protein (ALDP), adrenoleukodystrophy-related protein (ALDRP), 70-kDa peroxisomal membrane protein (PMP70) and PMP70-related protein (P70R). Inherited defects in ALDP cause the neurodegenerative disorder X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD). By comparative Northern blot analyses we found each of the four murine peroxisomal ABC transporter mRNA species at maximum abundance only in a few tissues, which differed for each family member. The four genes were also regulated differentially during mouse brain development: ALDP mRNA was most abundant in embryonic brain and gradually d…

Magna Carta and the Charter of the European Union

2016

Peter Gjortler explains that the EU Charter was originally introduced as a non-binding re-statement of rights – already acknowledged or interpreted in the EU – with the Nice Treaty of 2001. It was supposed to be a binding document as part of the European Constitution but the latter was rejected notably by France via a referendum in 2005. It was then proposed as a legally binding instrument with the revised Lisbon Treaty. He develops a systematic comparative approach between Magna Carta and the provisions of the Charter of the European Union, notably:

Eh and pH gradients in Camembert cheese during ripening: Measurements using microelectrodes and correlations with texture

2007

International audience; This study investigated the use of microelectrodes to continuously and simultaneously monitor pH and redox potential (Eh) gradients in Camembert cheeses from the rind to the core, as a function of ripening time (15 and 35 days). Cheeses were shown to be heterogeneous throughout their mass. An Eh gradient existed from the rind to the core. The surface was oxidizing (+330 to +360 mV) and the core was reducing and became more so in the course of ripening (−300 to −360 mV). A relationship between firmness and Eh was shown. pH gradients were in line with those previously described in the literature and related to ammonium and lactate gradients. Gradients evolved from the …
