Rodrik’s Trilemma rests on the incompatibility of democracy, national sovereignty, and global economic integration: any two can be combined, but never all three simultaneously and in full. Addressing the same problèmatique but from a different perspective, Dahrendorf’s Quandary posits that, over time, maintaining global economic competitiveness requires countries either to adopt measures detrimental to the cohesion of civil society or to restrict civil liberties and political participation. Abstract The phytochemical analyses of a somatic hybrid cell suspension culture of the genus and species combination Rauwolfia serpentina x Rhazya stricta revealed a number of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids. The alkaloids were identified as tubotaiwine, an isomeric mixture of vallesiachotamine, stemmadenine and vomilenine and were all produced in small amounts < 2mg/litre cell suspension. The hybrid cells showed a greater diversity of alkaloid biosynthesis when compared with the parental cultures.

Ethical Considerations in Crowdfunding

AbstractThe current chapter addresses ethical issues in crowdfunding practice from a multiple stakeholder perspective. It draws on ethical principles outlined in both classical and business-specific approaches. The discussion first presents classical approaches to ethical decision making. It then discusses whether crowdfunding presents an ethical solution or a source of ethical problems. Later, it suggests a framework presenting a classification of potential ethical dilemmas and pitfalls in crowdfunding practice, as well as potential means for addressing them. The discussion concludes with concrete implications for crowdfunding ethics research and practice.

Hyperbolic discount curves: a reply to Ainslie

Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11238-013-9361-8 Ainslie (Theory and Decision, 73, 3-34, 2012) challenges our interpretation of the properties of hyperbolic discount curves in an iterated prisoners' dilemma (IPD) model. In this reply, we discuss the emergence of hyperbolic discount functions in the behavioral economics literature and evaluate their properties. Furthermore, we present a summarized version of our IPD model and evaluate Ainslie's points of contention.

This paper underlines the importance of the concept of value for corporate social responsibility (CSR) and then explores it beyond economics, looking for its social and philosophical roots. Considering the most recent literature on the matter, the dilemma between a non-monetary, multi-variable conception and a monetary, one-variable conception is set. To obtain the origins of the meaning for this basic concept in CSR, Italian literature regarding ‘value in accounting’ is explored.
