Perhetekijöiden yhteys yläkoululaisten liikunta-aktiivisuuteen ja urheiluseuraharrastamiseen
2015
Kukkonen, T. & Laherto, L. 2015. Tutkimuksemme on osa LIKES–tutkimuskeskuksen Liikkuva koulu -tutkimusta. Käyttämä…

Intergenerational Transmission of Dyslexia : How do Different Identification Methods of Parental Difficulties Influence the Conclusions Regarding Chi…
2022
By investigating children whose parents have dyslexia, family risk (FR) studies are expanding our understanding of the intergenerational transmission of dyslexia. These studies, however, vary in their identification of FR, and how the use of different identification methods influences research findings and conclusions is yet to be systematically investigated. This study aims to evaluate the association between two FR identification methods—parental self-reports and direct skill assessments—and their unique contributions in the prediction of children's reading. The study employed two datasets: a prospective FR sample (half of the parents in the sample had dyslexia and the remaining half did …

Longitudinal associations between parental and offspring’s leisure‐time physical activity : The Young Finns Study
2022
Purpose The longitudinal influence of parental leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) on their offspring’s LTPA is poorly understood. This study examined the longitudinal associations between parental LTPA and offspring’s LTPA at two-time intervals. Method Child (offspring) participants (N=3596) were enrolled from the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study in 1980. Their LTPA was self-rated through nine phases from baseline to 2018 and categorized by year into youth (1980‒1986) and adult (1992‒2018) LTPA. Parental LTPA was assessed with a single self-reported question at three phases from 1980 to 1986. Latent growth curve modeling stratified by gender was fitted to estimate the potential p…

Increasing non-exercise physical activity : extended theory of planned behaviour model testing and the role of stress within sedentary parents
2015
Although much research has been done in studying physical activity and its health benefits, inactive behaviour has obtained little attention. The main purpose of the present study is to test the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) in predicting sedentary behaviour to a group of parents with young children and a sedentary job. The secondary purpose of this study is to explore if stress explains additional variation when is entered as an additional variable between intention and sedentary behaviour. The sample consisted of 68 sedentary adults with young children, both men (N = 29) and women (N = 39), (M = 37.8 years and SD = 5.8). Participants were divided into two groups: an experimental group…
