Antioxidant Properties of a Supercritical Fluid Extract of the Halophyte Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum L. from Sicilian Coasts: Nutraceutical and Cosme…

2020

The aim of this paper was to obtain different extracts from the aerial parts of Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum, comparing traditional extraction (using solvents with increasing polarity such as hexane, ethanol 80%, acetone 70% and water) with an eco-friendly technique (supercritical fluid extraction (SFE))

The combined impact of cold smoking and natural antioxidants on quality and shelf life of dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) fillets

2019

This study aimed to produce new value-added products from dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) as fillets when using cold smoking combined with natural antioxidants, obtained from Halocnemum strobilaceum a plant belonging to halophytes. The fillet treatments were controlled (untreated), immersed in standard brine (STD), treated with NaCI and antioxidant before freezing (Aox-pre) and treated with NaCl and antioxidant after thawing (Aox-post). The quality of dolphinfish fillets was assessed using sensory, biochemical, microbiological, and technological parameters. Treating fillets with antioxidants before freezing and cold smoking (Aox-pre) enhanced significantly the shelf life, as well as impro…

Special Uses of Viscoelastics

2000

The possibilities of viscoelastic use in phacoemulsification will be outlined in the following figures. Many ophthalmic surgeons apply viscoelastic substances in capsulorhexis to achieve a deep anterior chamber and extend the pupillary space (with a small pupil). Care must be taken during injection so that aqueous is permitted to flow out. When using a paracentesis to inject viscoelastic (Fig. 59), it must be big enough to allow aqueous outflow. For complete aqueous exchange in the anterior chamber, it is advisable to inject the viscoelastic into the opposite chamber angle.

Distribution potential in electrified microemulsions with potential determining salts

2018

Abstract The electrical polarization of lamellar and water-in-oil microemulsions composed of the aqueous solution of a potential determining salt (PDS), an organic solvent and a nonionic surfactant has been studied. The distribution of the PDS ions across the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions (ITIES) generates an electrical potential difference which can be used to control charge transfer processes. In macroscopic ITIES, this distribution potential is independent of the PDS concentration and can be determined from the electroneutrality condition far from the interface. In microemulsions, on the contrary, the distribution potential is smaller in magnitude and depends on …

Encapsulation of hydrophilic and lipophilized catechin into nanoparticles through emulsion electrospraying

2017

In this work, we investigated the potential of emulsion electrospraying that contained bacterial cellulose and proteins for the encapsulation of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Specifically, two different catechins, hydrophilic (H-EGCG) or lipophilized (L-EGCG), were encapsulated either on the aqueous or the oily phase of the emulsions in order to compare the antioxidants’ stability. Emulsion properties in terms of stability, droplet size, bulk and interfacial viscosity were studied combined with the evaluation of the properties of the produced particles, namely the morphology and size of the particles, the encapsulation efficiency (EE) of catechin and the stability of the EGCG within the …

Reversible Cluster Formation of Colloidal Nanospheres by Interparticle Photodimerization

2004

Crosslinked spherical nanoparticles based on trimethoxysilane monomers have been prepared by polycondensation in aqueous emulsion. These particles have been labeled chemically at their surface region with two different types of organic dye molecules (cinnamate, coumarin), which both are well known for their ability to undergo a reversible photodimerization if irradiated with light of a suitable wavelength. Upon irradiation of dilute solutions of these nanoparticles with UV light, the photodimerization of labels belonging to different colloidal nanoparticles caused the formation of large colloidal clusters consisting of chemically bound individual nanospheres. This process has been quantitat…

Synthesis of yttrium aluminum garnet nanoparticles in confined environment, and their characterization

2016

Abstract Nanopowders of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG, Y3Al5O12) have been prepared by thermal treatment of hydroxides obtained by synthesis in a confined environment constituted by water/Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)/1-butanol/n-heptane. The phase behavior of the above system has been investigated on varying the water/CTAB molar ratio (R) at constant 1-butanol/CTAB and heptane/CTAB molar ratio. The dispersed aqueous phases were constituted by solutions of ammonia and of yttrium and aluminum nitrates, respectively. Measures of Kinematic Viscosity, Electrical Conductivity and Small Angle X-ray Scattering have been carried out. It was found that, on increasing the ammonia solution cont…

A Nanoparticulate Drug-Delivery System for Rivastigmine: Physico-Chemical and in vitro Biological Characterization

2007

The preparation and characterization of surface-PEGylated polymeric nanoparticles are described. These systems were obtained by UV irradiation of PHM and PHM-PEG 2000 as an inverse microemulsion, using an aqueous solution of the PHM/PHM-PEG 2000 copolymer mixture as the internal phase and triacetin saturated with water as the external phase, and characterized by dimensional analysis, zeta-potential measurements and XPS. in vitro biological tests demonstrated their cell compatibility and their ability to escape from phagocytosis. Rivastigmine was encapsulated into the nanoparticle structure and drug-release profiles from loaded samples were investigated in PBS at pH = 7.4 and human plasma.

Arachnid oenocytes: ecdysone synthesis in the legs of harvestmen (Opilionidae).

1981

Cells measuring up to 130 microns have been found in the proximal segments of the femora of all four pairs of walking legs in various species of harvestmen (Phalangium opilio, Leiobonum limbatum, Opilio parietinus, and Opilio ravennae). These cells exhibit all the fine-structural characteristics of insect oenocytes, in particular the conspicuous agranular endoplasmic reticulum. Radioimmunoassay after in vitro incubation of these cells has demonstrated the synthesis of alpha- and beta-ecdysone. These ecdysteroids have been found in the ovaries and tergites of the opisthosoma as well as in the oenocytes.

The use of artificial nest-boxes by Apodemus sylvaticus dichrurus in Sicily

2008

Reports of wood mouse arboreality are rather scarce outside Britain. I reviewed and analysed 267 visits and 16.456 checks of glirids artificial nest-boxes mounted on trees, in twelve sample areas of Meso- and Supra-Mediterranean woodlands (Sicily, 1995-2005). The wood mouse was recorded only 65 times (0.395%) using the artificial nest-boxes in nine sample areas, and based on this low frequency, the wood mouse can be considered as an occasional dweller of artificial nest-boxes. The resource selection index allowed checking the use respect to the availability of nest-boxes placed at different heights. These were likely reached by climbing the dense understorey and low tree branches up to 5 m,…
