Colloidal stability of halloysite clay nanotubes

Abstract The colloidal stability of halloysite clay nanotubes dispersion is reviewed showing the strategy and the mechanism to obtain stable systems in water and apolar solvents. The selective modification of halloysite inner/outer surfaces can be achieved by exploiting electrostatic interactions. The adsorption of anionic surfactants onto the halloysite cavity allows generating inorganic cylindrical micelles that can be separated from the solvent. On the other hand, the functionalization of halloysite shell by positively charged surfactants drives to obtain stable water-in-oil emulsions. Large segmental bone defects occurring after trauma, bone tumors, infections or revision surgeries are a challenge for surgeons. The aim of our study was to develop a new biomaterial utilizing simple and cheap 3D-printing techniques. A porous polylactide (PLA) cylinder was printed and functionalized with stromal-derived factor 1 (SDF-1) or bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP-7) immobilized in collagen type I. Biomechanical testing proved biomechanical stability and the scaffolds were implanted into a 6 mm critical size defect in rat femur. Phylogeny of Salicornioideae (Chenopodiaceae): Diversification, biogeography, and evolutionary trends in leaf and flower morphology

Chenopodiaceae-Salicomioideae (14-16 gen./c. 90 spp.) are distributed worldwide in coastal and inland saline habitats. Most of them are easy to recognize by their succulent-articulated stem with strongly reduced leaves and by flowers aggregated in dense, thick spike-shaped thyrses. ITS and the atpB-rbcL spacer were sequenced for 67 species representing 14 genera of Salicomioideae and analysed with maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood, a fossil-calibrated molecular clock using the penalized likelihood method, and lineage through time plots. Controlled radical polymerization of styrene in miniemulsion polymerization using reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer

Abstract Miniemulsion polymerizations of styrene in the presence of two reversible addition–fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) agents were studied. The rates were significantly retarded by the presence of a RAFT agents S -(thiobenzoyl)thioglycolic acid, 1 , or dithiobenzoic acid 1-phenylethyl ester, 2 . Control in miniemulsion polymerization is not as good as for bulk polymerizations. The miniemulsions could also be stabilized against Ostwald ripening by a polymer terminated by a dithiobenzoic moiety. Business Cycles Synchronization in the EMU

This article asks whether the business cycles of the EU countries have become more or less synchronized after the introduction of the euro. Our findings show that all countries in our EU sample are better synchronized with the EMU-wide economy in the post-EMU period than they were before the euro. We also show that this increase in synchronization is present in all components of aggregate demand, as well as two supply-side variables, but it is more pronounced in the trade components (imports and, particularly, exports). It is also shown that the increase in trade within the EMU area is at least partly responsible for the increase in cyclical synchronization.
