Oscillations in the dynamics of temperature-driven phase separation

We examine the dynamics of the phase separation of a single phase of water-in-oil microemulsion droplets towards a phase of smaller droplets coexisting with a water-rich phase. Oscillations are observed in the turbidity of the mixture and in the specific heat, when this transition is induced by a continuous temperature increase. The oscillations indicate an unusual type of dynamics which involves an energy barrier only to be overcome by a large number of droplets collectively. It is due to the spontaneous curvature of the water-oil-interface, and conservation of volumes.

The Spanish mountain range of Gredos was included in the studies conducted on the Iberian peninsula to investigate helminth fauna of small mammals. The helminth community of the wood mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus (Rodentia, Muridae), was analysed. Qualitatively, 13 helminth species were detected: Plagiorchis sp. I and Plagiorchis sp. II (Trematoda); Taenia parva larvae, T. martis larvae, T. taeniaeformis larvae, Rodentolepis straminea and R. fraterna (Cestoda); and Trichuris muris, Heligmosomoides polygyrus, Syphacia stroma, S. frederici, Aspiculuris tetraptera and Rictularia proni (Nematoda). In this paper, new composite nanoparticles based on hyaluronic acid (HA) chemically cross-linked with alpha,beta polyaspartylhydrazide (PAHy) were prepared by the use of a reversed-phase microemulsion technique. HA-PAHy nanoparticles were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, confirming the occurrence of the chemical cross-linking, dimensional analysis, and transmission electron micrography, showing a sub-micrometer size and spherical shape. Zeta potential measurements demonstrated the presence of HA on the nanoparticle surface. Proteins represent a versatile biopolymer material for the preparation of nanoparticles due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low immunogenicity. This study presents a protein-based nanoparticle system consisting of high surface PEGylated lysozyme polyethylene glycol-modified lysozyme (LYZmPEG ). This protein modification leads to a solubility switch, which allows a nanoparticle preparation using a mild double emulsion method without the need of surfactants. The method allows the encapsulation of large hydrophilic payloads inside of the protein-based nanoparticle system.
