SummaryWe present a case of post-neurosurgical ventriculitis caused by carbapenemase-producing Enterobacter cloacae successfully treated with intraventricular colistin. Enterobacter spp are intrinsically resistant to aminopenicillins, cefazolin, and cefoxitin due to the production of constitutive chromosomal AmpC beta-lactamases. Moreover, extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacter spp have been identified in the USA and Europe, and carbapenems are considered the drug of choice in these cases. Our isolate was sensitive only to fosfomycin, tigecycline, and colistin, and 6 days of intravenous colistin had failed to eradicate the infection. This case provides clinical evidence to …

It has been reported that patients with chronic heart failure exhibit an intestinal overgrowth of primary gut bacterial pathogens, such as Shigella spp., Salmonella spp., Campylobacter spp., and Yersinia enterocolitica. We failed to reproduce these findings in a cohort of 39 patients admitted to the hospital with decompensated heart failure by means of conventional stool bacterial cultures and a multiplexed polymerase chain reaction assay.

3-Hydroxy-trans-7,8-dihydroxy-7,8-dihydrobenzo[a]pyrene (3-OH-BP-7,8-diol) was isolated from arylsulfatase/beta-glucuronidase-treated bile of rats to which 3-hydroxybenzo[a]pyrene (3-OH-BP) has been administered. This triol was investigated for mutagenicity in Salmonella typhimurium (reversion to histidine prototrophy of strains TA 97, TA 98, TA 100 and TA 1537) and in V79 Chinese hamster cells (acquisition of resistance to 6-thioguanine). One of the earliest events in Salmonella typhimurium pathogenesis seems to be the interaction of the bacterium with the mucus of the gut. After exposing S. typhimurium to guinea-pig colon, we were able to demonstrate by electron microscopy that S. typhimurium bacteria were trapped on, or in, the mucus layer. Specific components isolated from crude mucus secretions were found to aggregate the bacteria. The degree of bacterial aggregation was dependent on the protein concentration of the crude mucus and on time. Aggregation of S. typhimurium could be abolished by sugars: L-fucose exhibited the strongest inhibition, followed by D-glucose, D-galactose and D-mannose. Lectins were also capable of…

Abstract Hepatocarcinogenic polychlorinated and polybrominated biphenyls usually show negative results in in vitro mutagenicity assays. Problems in their testing result from their low water solubility and their slow rate of metabolism. Abstract Background: The prone position (PP) has proven beneficial in patients with severe lung injury subjected to mechanical ventilation (MV), especially in those with lobar involvement. We assessed the impact of PP on unilateral pneumonia in rabbits subjected to MV.
