Multiple chromosome polymorphism in the gobiid fish Gobius niger jozo L. 1758 (Pisces, Gobiidae).

By analysing chromosome preparation from 42 Gobius niger jozo specimens from the Gulf of Palermo (Sicily), four different karyotypes were observed: A (2n=52; NF=60), B (2n=51; NF=60), C (2n=50; NF=60) and D (2n=49; NF=60). A chromosome polymorphism due to Robertsonian fusion is present in this species.

Abstract Background Although numerous studies on parasites of the Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua L. have been conducted in the North Atlantic, comparative analyses on local cod parasite faunas are virtually lacking. The present study is based on examination of large samples of cod from six geographical areas of the North East Atlantic which yielded abundant baseline data on parasite distribution and abundance. Telomeres have the ability to adopt a lariat conformation and hence, engage in long and short distance intra-chromosome interactions. Budding yeast telomeres were proposed to fold back into subtelomeric regions, but a robust assay to quantitatively characterize this structure has been lacking. Therefore, it is not well understood how the interactions between telomeres and non-telomeric regions are established and regulated. We employ a telomere chromosome conformation capture (Telo-3C) approach to directly analyze telomere folding and its maintenance in S. cerevisiae. Cyanophyte calcification morphotypes and depositional environments (Alenquer oncolite, upper Kimmeridgian?, Portugal)

Terrigenous red siliciclastics of Upper Kimmeridgian(?) to Portlandian age around Alenguer, Portugal, comprise a narrow level of oncoid-bearing limestones. Oncoid cortices are composed of cyanophytes which appear in different calcification morphotypes according to changing physico-chemical parameters. Recent examples reveal that in most cases each calcification morphotype is related to one single species or one defined association. Hence, the characteristic calcification patterns are mostly biologically rather than abiogenetically controlled. Oncoid shapes, sizes and arrangement, on the other hand, are mainly determined by the hydraulic parameter within the depositional environment.

Boron enolates of 1-O-silylated erythrulose 3,4-acetonides prepared with Brown's chloro-dicyclohexylborane/tertiary amine system have been shown to react with achiral aldehydes in a highly stereoselective way to yield a 1,2-syn/1,3-syn stereoisomer. Through oxidative cleavage of the aldol adducts with periodic acid hydrate, enantiopure syn-α,β-dihydroxy esters with either hydroxyl group differently protected have been prepared. These erythrulose derivatives therefore behave as a chiral hydroxy acetate (glycolate) enolate equivalent.

A controlled and versatile NCA polymerization method for the synthesis of polypeptides

A versatile and simple methodology for the preparation of well-defined polyglutamate nanocarriers is described. For the first time ammonium salts with non-nucleophilic tetrafluoroborate anions are used as initiators for the ring opening polymerization of alpha-N-carboxyanhydrides (NCAs) allowing a multigram scale polyglutamate synthesis with defined molecular weight (up to 800 units), low polydispersity (<1.2), controlled chain end functionality and adequate stereoselectivity and absence of any trace of toxic impurity to allow biomedical applications.
