Microstructure and shear strength evolution of a lime-treated clay for use in road construction

The results of a comprehensive experimental programme are presented for assessing the long-term microstructural modifications and evaluating the effects of microstructural rearrangement on the stress–strain behaviour of a lime-treated high-plasticity clay for road embankments. The stress–strain behaviour at different lime content and curing time was investigated by means of direct shear tests; microstructural analyses were carried out combining Scanning Electron Microscope observations and Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry tests. Thermal response test analysis for U-pipe vertical borehole heat exchangers under groundwater flow conditions

Violent women in Spanish TV ads: Stereotype reversal or the same old same old?

Why did different agencies, promoting diverse products, create three ads featuring violence perpetrated by women on their rather immature and submissive male partners in order to sell their products? I posit that the female viewers connect subconsciously with the image of the proactive female protagonists through the psychological mechanism in which we identify with ‘our like’ on the screen. This, in turn, allows for the projection of ‘common ground’, a positive politeness strategy, to favourably dispose the female audience towards the protagonists and, by extension, the products advertised. Can copper(II) mediate Hoogsteen base-pairing in a left-handed DNA duplex? A pulse EPR study

Pulse EPR spectroscopy is sued to investigate possible structural features of the copper(II) ion coordinated to poly(dG-dC) poly(dG-dC) in a frozen aqueous solution, and the structural change of the polynucleotide induced by the presence of the metal ion. Two different copper species were identified and their geometry explained by a molecular model. According to this model, one species is exclusively coordinated to a single guanine with the N7 nitrogen atom forming a coordinative bond with the copper. Molecular characterization of Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum in Switzerland and France with a new multilocus sequence typing scheme

Syphilis is an important public health problem and an increasing incidence has been noted in recent years. Characterization of strain diversity through molecular data plays a critical role in the epidemiological understanding of this re-emergence. We here propose a new high-resolution multilocus sequence typing (MLST) scheme for Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum (TPA). We analyzed 30 complete and draft TPA genomes obtained directly from clinical samples or from rabbit propagated strains to identify suitable typing loci and tested the new scheme on 120 clinical samples collected in Switzerland and France. Il caracol quadrato in Sicilia (XVI secolo)

Square spiral staircases appear in Sicily during the 16th century in different contexts and for different purposes. This contribution focuses on two case studies at the “opposite poles” of a casuistry that shares the common characteristics of suspended ramps revolving within a square masonry box around a central void. By analysing these cases we find a probable link with models from Spain. At the same time, they demonstrate a common descent from a constructive culture rooted in the Spanish and Mediterranean stereotomic experience of the early modern age.

One-dimensional compression and consolidation of shales

This paper presents a comprehensive methodology for analysing the compression and consolidation behaviour of shales. An apparatus was designed to perform oedometric high-pressure tests by applying a maximum vertical total stress of 100 MPa and simultaneously controlling the pore water pressure of the specimen. An analytical method was formulated to analyse the shale consolidation behaviour, which allows information to be gathered on the coefficient of consolidation, stiffness, poroelastic properties, secondary compression and permeability of the tested material as a function of the applied stress conditions. In this paper, 2-methoxyethanol (commercially known as methyl cellosolve) is proposed as a potential entrainer for extractive distillation processes involving water–alcohol mixtures. The two alcohols studied in this work are ethanol and 1-propanol. Thereby, isobaric vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) data at atmospheric pressure have been measured for the ternary systems ethanol + water + 2-methoxyethanol and 1-propanol + water + 2-methoxyethanol.
