Improving the operation of an emergency department by using a simulation model

2007

FL Toni Ruohonen on tutkinut väitöskirjassaan monia suomalaisia koskettavaa ongelmaa: terveydenhuollon päivystysjärjestelmän tehottomuutta. Tutkimuksessa Ruohonen loi aluksi tietokoneella mallin oikeasta poliklinikasta sairaalan henkil…

Imagined Identities and Communities in the Learning Context of Finnish as a Second Language

2022

This case study on two migrant pupils of Finnish as L2 was carried out in Finland, which lies outside the most common context of such research, i.e. ESL or EFL in an English-speaking country. The study thus attempts to address the need to expand the research contexts of L2 identity issues. Using ethnographic data collected inside and outside a preparatory language classroom, this study aims to examine how the pupils make sense of their new learning environment and how, through language learning, they construct identities. The results show that they extend their repertoire of identities and connect to a wider world of possibilities as they strive to gain greater resources in their imagined c…

Diversification in evolutionary arenas - assessment and synthesis

2019

Abstract Understanding how and why rates of evolutionary diversification vary is a central issue in evolutionary biology and ecology. The concept of adaptive radiation has attracted much interest, but is metaphorical and verbal in nature, making it difficult to quantitatively compare different evolutionary lineages or geographic regions. In addition, the causes of evolutionary stasis are relatively neglected. Here we review the central concepts in the evolutionary diversification literature and bring these together by proposing a general framework for estimating rates of diversification and quantifying their underlying dynamics, which can be applied across clades and regions and across spat…

Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhosis;survival rate and prognostic factors

2010

Background: The role of prognostic variables in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) is controversial. Aims: To evaluate the survival of patients with HCC on cirrhosis treated with TACE and to analyse the prognostic factors affecting survival. Methods: From 1996 to 2006, 580 consecutive patients with HCC in cirrhosis were observed. Of these 194 patients underwent TACE. The primary end-point was survival. Independent predictors of survival were identified using the Cox model. Results: The cumulative 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year survival rates were 96%, 60%, and 41%, respectively. The multivariate analysis showed significant reduction of surv…

“Comme ça pour le plaisir…”

2010

“Comme ca pour le plaisir…” is a quotation taken from The Little Prince of Antoine de Saint - Exupéry that in a few words summarizes the subjects I want to discuss. Is there only pleasure in creative activities? How much creativity is related with painful parts of our inner world? More in specific: has writing to do with separation issues? In the first part of my paper I will try to answer to the above questions exploring some psychoanalytical concepts, their relationship with creativity and in particular with writing. I will therefore deepen Sigmund’s Freud’s notion of sublimation, Donald W. Winnicott’s concept of transitional object and Melanie Klein’s ideas about reparation of destroyed …
