Abstract Background/Aims: Seroconversion to anti-HBs or the loss of HBsAg is usually associated with complete elimination of the replicative hepatitis B virus. Usually in these patients hepatitis B virus DNA (HBV DNA) becomes undetectable. Routine controls of patients who underwent anti-HBs seroconversion by more sensitive tests showed that in some cases the virus persisted in the patient. Therefore the aim of our study was to evaluate if virus persistence could also be found in children with chronic hepatitis B after anti-HBs seroconversion. Abstract Extrahepatic viral load in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) is still under debate. In this study, HBV infection rates and viral titers were examined within all PBMC subpopulations using limiting dilution-PCR (LD-PCR). PBMCs of patients with acute or chronic hepatitis B were separated by magnetic beads in monocytes, B-cells, CD4+ T-cells, CD8+ T-cells, and NK cells. Viruses belonging to 9 families have been detected in cetaceans. We critically review the clinical features, pathology and epidemiology of the diseases they cause. Cetacean morbillivirus (family Paramyxoviridae) induces a serious disease with a high mortality rate and persists in several populations. It may have long-term effects on the dynamics of cetacean populations either as enzootic infection or recurrent epizootics. The latter presumably have the more profound impact due to removal of sexually mature individuals. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA was detected by polymerase chain reaction in the serum of 87 and liver tissue of 40 children with chronic hepatitis B, negative for HBV DNA by dot blot and Southern blot hybridization, respectively. In sera HBV DNA could be detected in 73 hepatitis B surface antigen carriers; 14 were hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg), 56 were anti-HBe-seropositive and 3 had neither HBeAg nor positive anti-HBe. In 14 anti-HBe-positive patients no HBV DNA could be found. Viral sequences in liver tissue were present in 33 specimens; 20 were HBeAg and 13 were anti-HBe-seropositive. Molecular Epidemiology and Evolution in an Outbreak of Fulminant Hepatitis B Virus

ABSTRACT In order to establish the transmission pathway for two outbreak patients affected by fulminant hepatitis B (FHB) following a shared period of hospitalization, we sequenced the complete genomes of the hepatitis B viruses (HBV) isolated from them as well as from the suspected common source and 11 additional controls. Phylogenetic and statistical analyses of these sequences revealed that the two FHB patients were indeed infected by a common source and that the fatal development of the disease did not appear to be associated with any mutation previously reported to be related to FHB. Abstract Hantaviruses are rodent-born agents which are pathogenic in humans causing haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome or hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. To induce a protective immunity against a European hantavirus (Puumala) we constructed chimaeric hepatitis B virus (HBV) core particles carrying defined fragments of the Puumala virus nucleocapsid protein. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) core particles carrying the amino-terminal 120 amino acids (aa) of the nucleocapsid (N) protein of the hantaviruses Dobrava, Hantaan or Puumala have been demonstrated to be highly immunogenic in mice when complexed with adjuvants. Here we demonstrate that even without adjuvant, these chimeric particles induced high-titered, and strongly cross-reactive N-specific antibody responses in BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice. The induced N-specific antibodies represented all IgG subclasses.
