Implant-supported fixed prostheses in a Patient with Osteogenesis Imperfecta : a 4-year follow-up

2017

Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a rare autosomal dominant connective tissue disorder in wich, the bone quality and density is affected. OI includes some metabolic disorders and have a wide range of clinical presentations. In Osteogenesis Imperfecta bone has a very low density and it is a disorder currently treated with bisphosphonates. Quality and quantity of bone is important for establishment of osseointegration in dental implants. There are few reported cases in the literature. This is a case report of a 61 year-old man with grade IV OI, rehabilitated with implant-supported fixed prostheses in the posterior right and left mandible, whithout bone grafts. At the 4-year follow-up, clinical …

Aryl hydrocarbon receptor activation by cAMP vs. dioxin: divergent signaling pathways.

2005

Even before the first vertebrates appeared on our planet, the aryl hydrocarbon receptor ( AHR ) gene was present to carry out one or more critical life functions. The vertebrate AHR then evolved to take on functions of detecting and responding to certain classes of environmental toxicants. These environmental pollutants include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (e.g., benzo[ a ]pyrene), polyhalogenated hydrocarbons, dibenzofurans, and the most potent small-molecular-weight toxicant known, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo- p -dioxin (TCDD or dioxin). After binding of these ligands, the activated AHR translocates rapidly from the cytosol to the nucleus, where it forms a heterodimer with aryl hydroc…

Histoincompatibility reactions in the hydrocoral Millepora dichotoma

1983

The xenogeneic- and allogeneic immunological specificity of the hydrocoral Millepora dichotoma has been investigated. Xenogeneic histoicompatibility reactions have been observed between this hydrocoral and a series of species belonging to the Demospongiae and to the Anthozoa (both Hexacorallia and Octocorallia). The xenogeneic histoincompatibility reactions proceed in the following sequence: (a) Species-unspecific sensitization; (b) necrosis formation, which is very likely due to an autolytic process; (c) callus formation, due to an hyperplastic growth of stolons; and (d) formation of a contact barrier in form of a barrier layer or a restored stolonial layer. Allogeneic histoincompatibility…

Model emulation to understand the joint effects of ice-nucleating particles and secondary ice production on deep convective anvil cirrus

2021

Abstract. Ice crystal formation in the mixed-phase region of deep convective clouds can affect the properties of climatically important convectively generated anvil clouds. Small ice crystals in the mixed-phase cloud region can be formed by heterogeneous ice nucleation by ice-nucleating particles (INP) and secondary ice production (SIP) by, for example, the Hallett-Mossop process. We quantify the effects of INP number concentration, the temperature dependence of the INP number concentration at mixedphase temperatures, and the Hallett-Mossop splinter production efficiency on the anvil of an idealised deep convective cloud using a Latin hypercube sampling method, which allows optimal coverage…

Peculiarities of imaging one- and two-dimensional structures in an emission electron microscope. 1. theory

2000

Local changes in work function cause deviations of the electrical microfield near a sample surface as a result of the uniform accelerating field distribution between the sample (cathode) and the extractor electrode (anode). This results in a change in the electron trajectories. As a consequence, the microscope image shows remarkable changes in position, size, intensity and lateral resolution of distinct details, which can be quantitatively described by the calculations presented here. Analysing these effects in the image gives an opportunity to determine the real lateral size of the observed structures and the distribution of local contact potentials.

Dopant Contrast in Semiconductors as Interpretation Challenge at Imaging by Electrons

2007

Mechanisms responsible for the contrast between differently doped areas in semiconductors, which is observed in electron micrographs, is discussed as regards the key factors determining the sign and magnitude of the contrast. Experimental data obtained by means of the scanning electron microscope (SEM), scanning low energy electron microscope and photoelectron emission microscope are reviewed together with hints following from them for compilation of a model of the contrast mechanism.
