Salt spray fog ageing of hybrid composite/metal rivet joints for automotive applications

2017

Abstract The present experimental investigation aims to investigate the effect of salt-fog exposition on the mechanical behaviour of composite/metal riveted joints. To this aim, two kinds of joint were exposed to salt-fog environmental conditions according to ASTM B117 standard, for fifteen weeks. In particular, two composite laminates (i.e. glass fibre and carbon fibre/epoxy composites) were used as composite substrate joined with the metal substrate (i.e. aluminium alloy Al 6060). Single-lap shear tests were carried out in order to evaluate the evolution of the mechanical performances and the damage mechanisms of the riveted joints during the ageing exposition. The results evidence that t…

Aging resistance of bio-epoxy jute-basalt hybrid composites as novel multilayer structures for cladding

2017

Abstract Aging resistance of jute reinforced laminates is compared with two jute/basalt hybrid laminates prepared with different stacking sequences (i.e., sandwich and intercalated configuration). To this aim, composites are exposed to cyclic conditions comprising hygrothermal stress and UV radiation to promote an accelerated aging, for a period of 84 days. Specimens of each laminate are tested after 14, 28, 56 and 84 days, respectively. Quasi-static flexural tests, Charpy impact tests and dynamic mechanical tests are performed according to international ASTM and ISO standards. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry are used to evaluate the morpholog…

Wettability of MXene and its interfacial adhesion with epoxy resin

2021

Abstract The surface energies of MXene nanofillers critically affect the mechanical properties and durability of any polymer-based devices and composites to which these fillers are applied. In this context, this study comprehensively investigates Ti3C2Tz MXenes prepared via the hydrochloric acid/lithium fluoride etching of Ti3AlC2. The surface energy values of 10-layer MXene coatings were evaluated to be between 47.98 and 64.48 mJ/m2 as per contact-angle measurements. The wettability properties were found to depend on the number of coating layers and the liquids used. Additionally, the coating roughness was evaluated by using atomic force microscopy. The effectiveness of MXenes as a reinfor…

Electrochemical behaviour and electrical percolation in graphite-epoxy electrodes

1994

The electrochemical properties of mouldable graphite-epoxy composite electrodes have been studied as a function of graphite content. The shape of ferri-ferrocyanide voltammograms relates to the ratio of graphite and an adsorption process. The dielectric constant from spectroelectrochemical impedance measurement of this composite electrode is maximum when the proportion of graphite is ca. 60 wt%. An electrochemical equivalent circuit is proposed. The graphite-epoxy composite acts as a multi-microelectrode near this proportion.

Solid State NMR Spectroscopy Investigation of the Molecular Structure of Epoxy Based Materials Cured in Different Conditions

2012

In this work two epoxy resin model systems, whose monomers are typically used in structural composites, were thermally cured in different cure conditions in order to obtain different cross-linking densities. Their molecular structures were investigated through solid state NMR spectroscopy in order to correlate them to the cure process conditions used and the results were discussed in the light of the dynamical mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) performed.

Geometry and stacking sequence effect on composite spinnaker pole’s stiffness: experimental and numerical analysis

2006

Composite materials are widely employed in sailing sports, a possible application is for the mast pole or other sail poles. In the paper the attention is focused on the spinnaker poles mechanical performances; in particular the focus is on axial and ring compressive properties of three different carbon fibre/epoxy resin spinnaker poles, to investigate both the diameter and stacking sequence effect on the mechanical performance of the structure. Starting from the stacking sequence used in the production of a particular spinnaker pole, the effect of a lamina at 0- in the middle of wall thickness is investigated with the purpose to obtain a more stiff structure. Moreover to test the proposed s…

Strain-dependent electrical resistance of epoxy/MWCNT composite after hydrothermal aging

2015

Abstract The electrical resistance of epoxy/multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites was studied under the effect of hygro- and hydrothermal aging. Tensile tests were conducted and the responses in the electrical resistance were measured during the tests for samples with different prehistory of environmental exposure. The overall pattern of the electrical resistance change versus strain for the samples tested consists of linear and nonlinear regions with a broad peak that precedes the ultimate strength of the sample and occurs at the onset of evident plastic deformation in the stress–strain curve. The composite with lower content of MWCNTs exhibits a more pronounced nonlinear behavior …

On the Elastic Behavior of a Cross-Ply Composite Pin-Joint with Clearance Fits

1999

The effect of pin/hole clearance fits on the elastic membranal behavior of a cross-ply fiber glass-reinforced epoxy laminate plate loaded in tension through a pin is examined by a finite element nonlinear contact analysis. No a priori assumption is made on the distribution of the contact pressure on the surface of the hole. Friction effects are not included. The numerical results correlate well with Hertzian theory of contact. It is demonstrated that clearance increases the peak compressive stress in the plate up to a factor of 3000% with respect to the perfect-fit case. Clearance also shifts the location of the peak tensile stress towards the pin/hole contact arc and decreases its magnitu…

Analysis of the effect of a stress raiser on the strength of a UD flax/epoxy composite in off-axis tension

2014

The effect of stress raisers in the form of a slit-like notch and an open circular hole on the tensile strength of a quasi-UD flax-fiber-reinforced composite is studied experimentally. A finite fracture mechanics approach is applied to determine the intralaminar fracture toughness of the composite and to predict the strength in the presence of stress concentration. Reasonably good agreement of the notch effect predicted using finite fracture mechanics with a coupled strength and toughness fracture criterion and test results is demonstrated.
