Modeling of surface structure formation after laser irradiation

The Stefan problem in a semi-infinite media under laser irradiation is considered. It is related to the melting and solidification processes, resulting in certain surface structure after the solidification. A simple model, as well as a more sophisticated one is proposed to describe this process. The latter model allows us to calculate the surface profile by solving a system of two nonlinear differential equations, if the shape of the solid-liquid interface is known. It has to be found as a solution of two-phases Stefan problem. Efficient Analysis of Arbitrarily Shaped Inductive Obstacles in Rectangular Waveguides Using a Surface Integral Equation Formulation

In this paper we propose to use the Surface Integral Equation technique for the analysis of arbitrarily shaped Hplane obstacles in rectangular waveguides, which can contain both metallic and/or dielectric objects. The Green functions are formulated using both spectral and spatial images series, whose convergence behavior has been improved through several acceleration techniques. New construction of algebro-geometric solutions to the Camassa-Holm equation and their numerical evaluation

An independent derivation of solutions to the Camassa-Holm equation in terms of multi-dimensional theta functions is presented using an approach based on Fay's identities. Reality and smoothness conditions are studied for these solutions from the point of view of the topology of the underlying real hyperelliptic surface. The solutions are studied numerically for concrete examples, also in the limit where the surface degenerates to the Riemann sphere, and where solitons and cuspons appear.

The Action Principle in Classical Electrodynamics

The main purpose of this chapter is to consider the formulation of a relativistic point particle in classical electrodynamics from the viewpoint of Lagrangian mechanics. Here, the utility of Schwinger’s action principle is illustrated by employing three different kinds of action to derive the equations of motion and the associated surface terms.

A best proximity point approach to existence of solutions for a system of ordinary differential equations

We establish the existence of a solution for the following system of differential equations (y x ′′((t t ) ) = = g f ((t t ,y x ((t t )) )) ,y x ((t t 0 0) ) = = x x *** in the space of all bounded and continuous real functions on [0, +∞[. We use best proximity point methods and measure of noncompactness theory under suitable assumptions on f and g. Some new best proximity point theorems play a key role in the above result.

Systems of quasilinear elliptic equations with dependence on the gradient via subsolution-supersolution method

For the homogeneous Dirichlet problem involving a system of equations driven by \begin{document}$(p,q)$\end{document} -Laplacian operators and general gradient dependence we prove the existence of solutions in the ordered rectangle determined by a subsolution-supersolution. This extends the preceding results based on the method of subsolution-supersolution for systems of elliptic equations. Positive and negative solutions are obtained.

epiModel: A system to build automatically systems of differential equations of compartmental type-epidemiological models

In this paper we describe epiModel, a code developed in Mathematica that facilitates the building of systems of differential equations corresponding to type-epidemiological linear or quadratic models whose characteristics are defined in text files following an easy syntax. It includes the possibility of obtaining the equations of models involving age and/or sex groups. © 2011.

A model of oil burnout from glass fabric

A mathematical model is proposed for the process of the removal (by burning) of oil contained in a glass fibre insulation fabric manufactured in Latvia. The small aspect ratio of the fabric allows simplifications to the modelling which reduce the problem to a single nonlinear ordinary differential equation. When the effects of reflected radiation are also included, the differential equation is supplemented by two integral equations. Predictions of the position of the ‘burning zone’ accord well with observations made at the factory.
