Changes in the pea seed proteome in response to drought combined with sulfur deficiency

2017

EABAPGEAPSI DOCT INRA; Pea (Pisum sativum L.) produces seeds rich in proteins, but seed yield and quality remain unstable across years due to abiotic stresses occurring during the reproductive period. Drought and sulfur deficiency are two abiotic stresses that interact in the current context of climate change and lowinput practices, and recent studies suggest a role of sulfate transport and metabolism in the plant response to drought (Ernst et al., 2010; Chan et al., 2013; Gallardo et al., 2014; Ahmad et al., 2016). In this study, we investigated the impact of sulfur deficiency combined with drought on the pea seed proteome. Pea plants were subjected to sulfur-deficiency two weeks after sow…

Background: The measurement of carbon isotopic discrimination in grape sugars at harvest (δ13 C) is an integrated assessment of water status during ripening. It is an efficient alternative to assess variability in the field and discriminate between management zones in precision viticulture, but further work is needed to completely understand the signal.; Results: This work, spanning over 3 years, performed in a hillslope toposequence in Burgundy, delineates the relationships between main soil properties (gravel amount, slope, texture) and the grapevine water status assessed by δ13 C. The highest δ13 C, indicating most severe water deficit, was recorded in gravelly soils on steep slopes. The…

Understanding of pea capacity to recover in terms of growth and nitrogen acquisition after water stress : molecular and ecophysiologic studies

2020

Pea (Pisum sativum L.) has the unique ability to fix atmospheric dinitrogen (N2) via a symbiosis with soil bacteria in root nodules. Although this specificity makes this crop particularly interesting in the context of agroecological transition, symbiotic nitrogen fixation is particularly sensitive to abiotic stresses such as water deficit, which contributes to the yield instability of this protein crop and reduces its interest for farmers. Yield stability depends both on plant's ability to tolerate stress and on its ability to recover after stress. However, the mechanisms involved during the recovery period have been for now poorly explored. It is, therefore, essential to identify traits of…

Growth and biomass partitioning of Arbutus unedo, Laurus nobilis, Phillyrea angustifolia and Rhamnus alaternus seedlings under water deficit

2013

Water scarcity in the Mediterranean areas is very common and the selection of drought tolerant species is a priority for landscaping purposes in the Mediterranean areas. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of water deficit on growth and biomass partitioning of Arbutus unedo, Laurus nobilis, Phillyrea angustifolia and Rhamnus alaternus. Seventy-two seedlings per species were grown in the greenhouse in 4-liter pots and three water regimes were imposed starting on 6 April and until 9 June, 2010. One-third of the plants was well irrigated to maintain soil water content in the 25-35% range (CTR); a second group of plants was deficit-irrigated to maintain soil water content in …

Upscaling leaf gas exchange measurements to the whole grapevine canopy: An update

2009

This review first revisits current knowledge about single-leaf function, viz. photosynthesis, chiefly in relation to environmental factors, that underscores the importance of multiple summer stresses. Emphasis is placed on the response different genotypes show under light and heat stress with or without soil-water shortage. Secondly, it tackles the thorny issue of extrapolating single-leaf readings to the whole-canopy level, with special reference to both methodological and physiological implications. Whole-canopy gas-exchange systems deliver and emphasise the usefulness of such an approach in achieving key research goals. One case in point is quantifying the amount and dynamics of canopy g…

Mechanical Behavior of Concrete Columns Confined by Laterally Pre-Tensioned FRP

2011

This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation of concrete columns confined by a wound pre-tensioned carbon filament yarn. Yarn winding equipment was developed in the Institute of Polymer Mechanics with the ability to set the desired pre-tension force and thereby producing confined concrete specimens with different initial lateral pressure. It is shown that initial lateral pressure increases the axial stress at which intense internal cracking of the concrete develops.

The novice language teacher's guide to survival : dialogue between the new and the experienced language teacher

2017

Aloittelevat opettajat kohtaavat ammatissaan merkittävän määrän haasteita ensimmäisien työvuosien aikana (Blomberg 2009; Heikkinen et al. 2012; Laaksola 2007). Haasteita ovat muun muassa psykologiset aspektit kuten identiteetin muodostaminen ja stressi (Kyriacou 2001; Niemi 1998), sekä ulkoiset tekijät kuten opettajiin kohdistuvat ristiriitaiset odotukset ja alati muuttuva työympäristö (Luukkainen 2005; Niemi 1999). Idea tarjota tukea aloittelevalle opettajalle syntyi kirjoittajien omista kokemuksista ja keskusteluista koskien aloittelevan opettajan asemaa. Monia kollegojamme huolestutti opetusharjoittelujakson pituus, ja moni tuleva aineenopettaja koki, ettei ollut valmis kohtaamaan kielen…

Teachers’ Focus of Attention in First-grade Classrooms: Exploring Teachers Experiencing Less and More Stress Using Mobile Eye-tracking

2021

This study investigated teachers’ focus of attention and stress in first-grade classrooms. Teachers’ (n = 53) focus of attention was recorded in fall and spring with a mobile eye-tracking device, and the teachers reported stress via questionnaires. Correlation analysis was used to examine association between teacher stress (exhaustion, cynicism, and inadequacy) and focus of attention. Then, one teacher reporting more stress and one reporting less stress were selected for a case study to examine variations in their focus of attention. The results showed positive associations between teachers’ perceived inadequacy and overall focus of attention (whole eye-tracking recording) both in fall and …

Exogenous Growth Regulators and Water Stress Enhance Long-Term Storage Quality Characteristics of Onion

2023

Exogenous growth regulators (GRs) play a crucial role in alleviating water stress and sustaining crop yields in water-stressed areas. However, their effects on onions post-harvest quality, particularly post-monsoon onion—often preferred for long-term storage—were never studied. Therefore, this led us to investigate the interaction between water stress and GRs on the physiochemical and functional quality attributes of onions during long-term storage (9 months, at 25 ± 1 °C and 65 ± 5% RH). Onion crop was raised under four water stress levels i.e., 1.00–0.85, 0.84–0.70, 0.69–0.40, and 0.39–0.10 IW: CPE, designated as no, low, medium, and s…
