This study analyses the effects on health of the asymmetry of power relations between the sexes and, specifically, how life conditions have a bearing on personal well-being. Subjective discomfort usually manifests itself by means of symptoms. Epidemiological studies show a higher physical and mental morbidity in women. How and Why to Start and Run a SIGCHI Local Chapter

There is a vast and increasing interest towards local HCI communities around the globe and in particular on geographical areas in which HCI has only recently started to gain increasing interest by local industries as well as academic institutions. A SIGCHI Local Chapter is one of the ways a local HCI community can organize and get visibility and support for their activities. However, many active volunteers in this field might not be aware of this possibility. The main goal of the Chapters' SIG in CHI'15 is to inform interested parties of SIGCHI Local Chapters and to find ways in which SIGCHI could better support local HCI communities with their various needs all over the world.
Depth perception in tablet-based augmented reality at medium- and far-field distances

Current augmented reality (AR) systems often fail to indicate the distance between the user and points of interest in the environment. Empirical evaluations of human depth perception in AR settings compared to real world settings are needed. Our goal in this study was to understand tablet-based AR depth perception by comparing it with real-world depth perception.

Parental Trust in Teachers and Children’s Interest in Reading and Math: A Longitudinal Study

This study investigated cross-lagged associations between parental trust in a child’s teacher and children’s academic interest across Grades 1–4 in primary school. Parents rated trust in their child’s teacher, and 576 children reported their interest in reading and math at each grade. The results showed that high parental trust in a child’s teacher predicted the child’s high interest in math. In addition, the child’s high interest in reading in Grade 2 was related to the father’s subsequent trust in the teacher. peerReviewed

ABSTRACTThis study examined associations between classroom-level reading fluency, comprehension, interest in reading, and teaching practices. Participants were 466 children from 21 classrooms. Reading fluency and interest were assessed at the beginning and end of Grade 1, reading comprehension at the end of Grade 1. Teaching practices were observed with the Early Childhood Classroom Observation Measure (ECCOM). Teachers were more likely to use teacher-directed methods in classrooms where children had poorer initial reading fluency. Motivos de uso de las redes sociales virtuales: Análisis de perfiles de mujeres rurales

En el presente trabajo, se muestran los resultados de una investigación cuyo objetivo es conocer los motivos de uso de las redes sociales virtuales de las mujeres rurales y determinar perfiles en función de sus respuestas. Para ello, se realiza un estudio de encuesta, cuyo cuestionario se aplica a 478 mujeres de entornos rurales de Andalucía de 18 a 65 años. Los resultados muestran dos perfiles de mujeres en función de sus motivaciones de uso de las redes, encontrando que las que usan las redes con una mayor variedad de motivos, muestran mayores niveles en intensidad, habilidad y autonomía de uso, mientras que las que la usan exclusivamente por motivos relacionales presentan niveles inferio…

La investigación previa indica que la estabilidad emocional, como rasgo de personalidad, tiene una repercusión relevante sobre el comportamiento humano. Dicha estabilidad tiene dos dimensiones: El “umbral de alteración emocional” (facilidad para experimentar estados emocionales alterados) y la “resiliencia emocional” (la capacidad para recuperarse de las emociones negativas y volver a la estabilidad emocional).
