Non-fragile sliding mode control for flexible air-breathing hypersonic vehicles

2012

The non-fragile sliding mode tracking control design problem for a flexible air-breathing hypersonic vehicles (FAHVs) is investigated in this paper. A linearized model is constructed with respect to a trim point for the nonlinear, dynamically coupled simulation model of the FAHVs with external disturbance, then a reference model is designed and a tracking error model is proposed. An integral sliding surface is designed, and then the non-fragile H ∞ controller design problem for the sliding mode dynamics is discussed. sufficient condition is derived for the existence of such a controller in the presence of unmatched disturbance. A SMC law is derived to guarantee the reachability of the speci…

Modern small wind turbine design solutions comparison in terms of estimated cost to energy output ratio

2015

This paper presents a series of estimations performed in order to establish the actual cost-effectiveness of three different small wind turbines (SWTs) design solutions. Each of them was evaluated and based on their power curves and installation costs, using wind data from a numerical weather prediction (WNP) model, a return on investment (ROI) period was calculated. The chosen turbines are: a standard three bladed horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT), an advanced diffuser augmented HAWT and a Darrieus type vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). The conclusions drawn from this study entertain the idea that from the economical point of view, a price reduction of SWT systems is more important than…

Performance analysis of photovoltaic powered dc motor — Propeller system

2015

The application of autonomous directly photovoltaic (PV) powered electro-mechanical has received increasing attention for different applications (e.g. PV water pumping, PV powered cooling of arid climate greenhouses, solar vehicles etc). The PV array output is a nonlinear and time-dependent power supply that varies with solar intensity and cell temperature, so the performance characteristics of the directly PV-powered DC motor — propeller system are very different than when powered by a constant DC voltage. The focus of this work is to do performance analysis of directly PV-powered DC motor — propeller system. Through performance evaluation, it has been observed that power transfer matching…

Impact of very low crop residues cover on wind erosion in the Sahel

2011

International audience; In the Sahel, with average annual precipitation in the order of 500 mm yr− 1, wind erosion occurs mainly on cultivated millet fields whose surfaces are only partially covered by crop residues. The impact of these residues on wind erosion was not clearly established. The objective of this study is thus to quantify the actual amount of crop residues in traditional Sahelian fields and to determine their impacts on wind erosion by reference to a bare surface throughout the seasonal cycle over several years. At the beginning of the year during dry season, Sahelian farmers use to "clean" their fields, i.e. cut and lay flat on the soil surface any millet stalks still standi…

Numerical and analytical analysis of a monopile-supported offshore wind turbine under ship impacts

2021

Abstract Offshore wind turbines in the vicinity of ship traffic are exposed to increased risks of ship collisions. To better understand the impact mechanism, this paper evaluates the dynamic responses of a monopile-supported wind turbine under ship impacts, using both numerical and analytical methods. The nonlinear finite element method is applied during the numerical simulations, and the wind load effects, soil conditions, and rigid and deformable ship bows are considered. The analytical approach, originally developed based on the energy method, is extended here to address the damping effects of monopile-supported wind turbines. In the case study, the impacts are studied between a 4600-ton…

WING FLUTTER SUPPRESSION ENHANCEMENT USING A WELL-SUITED ACTIVE CONTROL MODEL

2007

State-space theory is employed here to model a new active wing flutter suppression control. In this paper, the design of a flutter suppression control law, for the NASA Benchmark Active Control Technology wing, is proposed through a single input-single output controller and unsteady aerodynamics is modelled using the Theodorsen's theory. Wing dynamic model is obtained by combining the aeroelastic equations of motion with the actuator model presented. Open-loop dynamic behaviour is examined for a single feedback variable that combines pitch and plunge accelerations. Here, a new formulation of control law, based on classical control techniques and featuring two feedback closed-loops, is succ…

Expression of the human XPB/ERCC-3 excision repair gene-homolog in the sponge Geodia cydonium after exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

1998

Abstract The marine demosponge Geodia cydonium encodes a gene, termed GCXPB , which displays 62% identity to the human XPB/ERCC-3 gene that specifically corrects the repair defect in xeroderma pigmentosum and in Cockayne's syndrome. The cDNA was isolated and characterized the deduced aa sequence, XPB_GEOCY, with the calculated size of 91,541 Da comprises the characteristic domains found in the related helicases. Phylogenetic tree analysis revealed that the sponge sequence is grouped to the metazoan related XPB/ERCC-3 polypeptides. Northern Blot analyses have been performed with sponge samples collected at different depths, thus exposed to different intensities of UV sunlight in the field. T…

RNA dependent DNA polymerase in cells of xeroderma pigmentosum

1971

Abstract Cells from X.P. ∗ skin contain an RNA dependent DNA polymerase, while in cells from normal skin this enzyme is lacking. This finding stimulates the thought that carcinogenesis in X.P. cells is due to an infection with an oncogenic RNA virus.

Polymorphisms in DNA repair genes modulate survival in cisplatin/gemcitabine-treated non-small-cell lung cancer patients.

2006

Abstract Background: Impaired DNA repair capacity may favorably affect survival in cisplatin/gemcitabine-treated non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. We investigated the association of survival with genetic polymorphisms in X-ray repair cross-complementing group 1 and group 3 (XRCC3), xeroderma pigmentosum group D (XPD), excision repair cross-complementing group 1, ligase IV, ribonucleotide reductase, TP53, cyclooxygenase-2, interleukin-6, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ, epidermal growth factor, methylene-tetra-hydrofolate reductase and methionine synthase. Patients and methods: One hundred and thirty-five stage IV or IIIB (with malignant pleural effusion) NSCLC patien…
