Ultraschnelle MRT der Lungenventilation mittels hochpolarisiertem Helium-3*

2000

Objective Assessment of the temporal and spatial dynamics of hyperpolarized Helium-3 (3He) distribution in the lung with ultrafast gradient-echo magnetic-resonance imaging. Material and methods Coronal images of the lung were acquired using ultrafast gradient-echo pulse sequences with TR/TE = 3.3 ms/1.3 ms (slice thickness, 40 mm) and TR/TE = 2.0 ms/0.7 ms (without slice selection). A series of 80 or 160 projection images was obtained with 210 ms or 130 ms temporal resolution, respectively. Imaging was performed during several respiratory cycles after application of a single bolus of 300 mL hyperpolarized 3He. Measurements were performed in six healthy volunteers (spontaneous breathing). Re…

A laser desorption/resonance enhanced photoionisation TOF-system for the spatially resolved trace analysis of elements

2004

Abstract A novel method for direct and spatially resolved elemental trace analysis with high sensitivity and elemental selectivity is presented. The concept is based on the combination of a commercial MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer with a pulsed laser system for resonant postionisation of neutrals. While the MALDI method is usually applied for investigations of large organic compounds and biomolecules, the technique discussed here concerns the low mass range around 1 ⩽ A ⩽ 300. The analytical performances of the setup with respect to mass analysis, spatial resolution and overall detection efficiency are discussed.

The three-dimensional structure of Drosophila melanogaster (6–4) photolyase at room temperature

2021

A crystal structure of a photolyase at room temperature confirms the structural information obtained from cryogenic crystallography and paves the way for time-resolved studies of the photolyase at an X-ray free-electron laser.

Performance of the First ANTARES Detector Line

2009

In this paper we report on the data recorded with the first Antares detector line. The line was deployed on the 14th of February 2006 and was connected to the readout two weeks later. Environmental data for one and a half years of running are shown. Measurements of atmospheric muons from data taken from selected runs during the first six months of operation are presented. Performance figures in terms of time residuals and angular resolution are given. Finally the angular distribution of atmospheric muons is presented and from this the depth profile of the muon intensity is derived.

Comparison of line-by-line and band models of near-IR methane absorption applied to outer planet atmospheres

2012

Import OPTIWOS; International audience; Recent improvements in high spectral resolution measurements of methane absorption at wavenumbers between 4800 cm(-1) and 7919 cm(-1) have greatly increased the number of lines with known lower state energies, the number of weak lines, and the number of lines observed at low temperatures (Campargue, A., Wang, L, Kassi, S., Masat, M., Votava, O. Quantification and classification of high-resolution magic angle spinning data for brain tumor diagnosis.

2007

The goal of this work is to propose a complete protocol (preprocessing, processing and classification) for classifying brain tumors with proton high-resolution magic-angle spinning ((1)H HR-MAS) data. The different steps of the procedure are detailed and discussed. Feature extraction techniques such as peak integration, including also the automated quantitation method AQSES, were combined with linear (LDA) and non-linear (least-squares support vector machine or LS-SVM) classifiers. Classification accuracy was assessed using a stratified random sampling scheme. The results suggest that LS-SVM performs better than LDA while AQSES performs better than the standard peak integration feature extr…

Optical magnetic circular dichroism in threshold photoemission from a magnetite thin film

2011

Threshold photoemission excited by polarization-modulated ultraviolet femtosecond laser light is exploited for phase-sensitive detection of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) for a magnetite thin film. Magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) shows a magnetic circular dichroism of ∼(4.5 ± 0.3) × 10(-3) for perpendicularly incident circularly polarized light and a magnetization vector switched parallel and antiparallel to the helicity vector by an external magnetic field. The asymmetry in threshold photoemission is discussed in comparison to the magneto-optical Kerr effect. The optical MCD contrast in threshold photoemission will provide a basis for future laboratory photoemission studies on magnetic surfaces.

First M87 Event Horizon Telescope Results. V. Physical Origin of the Asymmetric Ring

2019

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has mapped the central compact radio source of the elliptical galaxy M87 at 1.3 mm with unprecedented angular resolution. Here we consider the physical implications of the asymmetric ring seen in the 2017 EHT data. To this end, we construct a large library of models based on general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations and synthetic images produced by general relativistic ray tracing. We compare the observed visibilities with this library and confirm that the asymmetric ring is consistent with earlier predictions of strong gravitational lensing of synchrotron emission from a hot plasma orbiting near the black hole event horizon. The ring rad…

Foodomics assessed by Fourier transform mass spectrometry

2019

Abstract With its ultrahigh resolution power and excellent mass accuracy, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry is the perfct tool to analyze the “foodome” as the set of all polar small molecular compounds present in an investigated food sample. We present here selected applications of this technique in unraveling the metabolome in complex foods (thermally affected, fermentation products, distillates) such exemplified with Maillard reaction products or with wines and spirits. Technical considerations for high resolution mass analyzers are provided from a practical point of view. Moreover, aspects of food safety and nutritional quality are covered by presenting applicat…

Analysis of RET promoter CpG island methylation using methylation-specific PCR (MSP), pyrosequencing, and methylation-sensitive high-resolution melti…

2016

Background Already since the 1990s, promoter CpG island methylation markers have been considered promising diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive cancer biomarkers. However, so far, only a limited number of DNA methylation markers have been introduced into clinical practice. One reason why the vast majority of methylation markers do not translate into clinical applications is lack of independent validation of methylation markers, often caused by differences in methylation analysis techniques. We recently described RET promoter CpG island methylation as a potential prognostic marker in stage II colorectal cancer (CRC) patients of two independent series. Methods In the current study, we analy…
