Spectroscopic analyses of the influence of electron beam irradiation doses on mechanical, transport properties and microstructure of chitosan-fish ge…

2015

International audience; The objective of this work was to better display the effect of electron beam accelerator doses (0, 20, 40 and 60 kGy) on structural, mechanical and barrier properties of edible lightly plasticized chitosan-fish gelatin blend film. From Electron Spin Resonance (ESR), signal at 3500 G for blend film was identified as free radical formation during irradiation, which might introduce intermolecular cross-linking into the polymer matrix, thus affecting structural properties. Tensile Strength (TS) for gelatin film significantly increased with growing irradiation doses (improved by 30% for 60 kGy), but the TS of chitosan and blend films were not significantly affected. On th…

Electron Spin Resonance and Thermoluminescence dating of shells and sediments from Sambaqui (shell mound) Santa Marta II, Brazil

2020

In Tupi, the word Sambaqui means “mound of shells”. These archaeological sites are cultural vestiges left by the prehistoric occupation of the Brazilian coast from five to six thousand years ago. Mollusks, fishes, and other marine edible foods were important for the survival of this population. The remains of foods, mainly shells, were heaped up, giving a mound of different proportions, which became part of the landscape of the Brazilian coastal plain. Due to the large number of Sambaquis in Brazil and considering that Sambaqui Santa Marta II, Laguna, SC, has not yet been dated, Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) measurements were performed in aragonite shells collected from different layers of …

Alanine blends for ESR measurements of thermal neutron fluence in a mixed radiation field

2007

In this paper, the results of a study on the electron spin resonance (ESR) dosimetry to measure thermal neutron fluence in a mixed radiation field (neutron and photons) are presented. The ESR responses of alanine dosemeters with different additives are compared. In particular, the (10)B-acid boric and the Gd-oxide were chosen to enhance the sensitivity of alanine dosemeters to thermal neutrons. Irradiations were carried out inside the thermal column of the TAPIRO reactor of the ENEA center, Casaccia Rome. The main results are a greater neutron sensitivity and a smaller lowest detectable fluence for the dosemeters with gadolinium than for dosemeters of alanine with (10)B, which is well known…

12C ion beam dose distribution in presence of medium inhomogeneities: comparison between different measurements and simulations with the treatment pl…

2012

Heavy-ions beams offer several advantages compared to other radiation such as low lateral scattering and high biological effectiveness (RBE) in the Bragg peak region, making them particularly attractive for the treatment of radio-resistant tumours localized close to organs at risk [1]. The extension of ion therapy to new clinical cases requires the exploitation of a dedicated treatment planning system (TPS) based on the existing version of TRiP98 [2,3], established TPS for carbon ions. The theoretical models and experimental databases included in TRiP98 are presently mainly based on measurements in water. This approximation can be applied successfully to reproduce many biological tissues wi…

Esriinin merkitys syövässä

2014

Tutkimukseni selvittää esriinin tehtäviä ja säätelyä erityisesti syövän kannalta. Esriini kuuluu ERM-proteiiniperheeseen (esriini/radiksiini/moesiini). Nämä proteiinit tarttuvat toisaalta solun aktiinitukirankaan, toisaalta solukalvon reseptoreihin. Esriini vaikuttaa solutukirangan järjestäytymiseen ja solun kortikaalisiin muodonmuutoksiin. Voimistunut esriinin ekspressio korreloi tiettyjen syöpätyyppien maligniteettiin ja erityisesti metastointikykyyn. Esriinin tiedetään esimerkiksi olevan välttämätön osteosarkooman metastaasissa. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää Src-kinaasin katalysoiman fosforyloinnin merkitystä esriinin toiminnalle syöpään liittyvissä ilmiöissä, esim. invaasiossa j…

2016

Pajari, J. 2016. Sisäeritteisen AGE-reseptorin (esRAGE) yhteys luurankolihaksen metaboliseen terveyteen liittyviin biologisiin merkkitekijöihin. Terveystieteiden laitos, Jyväskylän yliopisto, Liikuntalääketieteen pro gradu –tutkielma, 63 sivua. Monet säännöllisen fyysisen aktiivisuuden terveyshyödyt välittyvät parantuneen liikuntaan liittyvään oksidatiivisen kapasiteetin kautta, jolla on vahva yhteys luurankolihaksen aineenvaihduntaan, pitkäikäisyyteen ja yleiseen terveyteen. Sisäeritteinen AGE-reseptori (esRAGE) on merkittävä liukoisen AGE-reseptorin (sRAGE) muoto, joka on mahdollinen kroonisiin sairauksiin liittyvä biologinen merkkitekijä.

Monitoring a meat-free pledge with smartphones:An experimental study

2020

Pledges are a popular strategy to encourage meat reduction, though experimental studies of their efficacy are lacking. Three-hundred and twenty-five participants from three different countries (UK, Germany, Australia) were randomly assigned to pledge 28 days meat-free or not, and their behavior was tracked via smartphones. Participants answered daily surveys regarding their eating behavior, meat cravings, and shared photos of their meals. Baseline data was collected prior to the pledge, after the 28 days, and one-month post-intervention. Participants assigned to the pledge condition ate less meat across the 28 days, compared to control participants. Meat reductions, observed at outtake, did…

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibition : towards an indication to treat diabetic kidney disease

2020

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) have clearly demonstrated their beneficial effect in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) on top of the standard of care [blood glucose control, renin–angiotensin system blockade, smoking cessation and blood pressure (BP) control], even in patients with overt DKD. However, the indication of this drug class is still blood glucose lowering in type 2 diabetic patients with estimated glomerular filtration rate >45mL/min/1.73m2. Based on the new evidence, several scientific societies have emphasized the preferential prescription of SGLT2i for patients at risk of heart failure or kidney disease, but still within the limits set by health authorities. A r…

Catechol-O-Methyltransferase Gene Polymorphism Is Associated with Skeletal Muscle Properties in Older Women Alone and Together with Physical Activity

2008

BackgroundMuscle strength declines on average by one percent annually from midlife on. In postmenopausal women this decrement coincides with a rapid decline in estrogen production. The genetics underlying the effects of estrogen on skeletal muscle remains unclear. In the present study, we examined whether polymorphisms within COMT and ESR1 are associated with muscle properties and assessed their interaction and their combined effects with physical activity.Methodology/principal findingsA cross-sectional data analysis was conducted with 434 63-76-year-old women from the population-based Finnish Twin Study on Aging. Body anthropometry, muscle cross-sectional area (mCSA), isometric hand grip a…
