Abstract The volatile constituents obtained from the aerial parts of Teucrium polium were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The oil was found to contain 37 components, of which 30 were identified. The major constituents were β-pinene (18.0%), β-caryophyllene (17.8%), α-pinene (12.0%), caryophyllene oxide (10.0%), myrcene (6.8%) and germacrene-D (5.3%)

Seseli L. genus, belonging to the Apiaceae family, includes more than eighty taxa, mainly growing in Europe and Asia. Due to the several biological properties, species of this genus have been largely investigated, showing to be a rich source of coumarins, as well as, of essential oils with anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antifungal, cytotoxic, etc. properties. In this work, the essential oil of the aerial parts of a not previously investigated accession of Prangos trifida (Mill.) Herrnst. & Heyn (Apiaceae), collected in Northern Italy, was analysed by GC/MS. Twenty-five compounds were identified, accounting for 91.30% of the total oil, which is characterised by a high content of monoterpene hydrocarbons (71.26%). The main constituents of the essential oil were cis-beta-ocimene (18.12%), alpha-phellandrene (12.14%), sylvestrene (11.32%), p-mentha-1,3,8-triene (9.56%) and alpha-pinene (8.85%). The title compound, C16H23BrCl2O, was synthesized in three steps from β-himachalene (3,5,5,9-tetramethyl-2,4a,5,6,7,8-hexahydro-1H-benzocycloheptene), which was isolated from the essential oil of the Atlas cedar (cedrus atlantica). The molecule is built up from two fused six- and seven-membered rings, each linked to a three-membered ring. The six-membered ring has a screw-boat conformation, whereas the seven-membered ring displays a twist-boat conformation. The absolute structure was established unambiguously from anomalous dispersion effects.

The aim of the research was to obtain extracts of Humulus lupulus L hop cones of the Marynka variety and to evaluate their antibacterial properties against three strains of gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli ATCC 10536, E. coli IPS and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853) and against two strains of gram-positive bacteria (Enterococcus hirae ATCC 10541 and Bacillus cereus ATCC 12826). Anthemis parlatoreana was collected in the north west coast of Sicily. Fresh and dried aerial parts were subjected to distillation procedure for the extraction and isolation of essential oils. In both fresh and dried samples, the most abundant chemical classes were ketones and esters, represented to a greater extent by β-thujone and β-artemisia acetate, respectively. In dried vegetable material, a high content of α-pinene and δ3-carene was also registered. The interest towards the application of essential oils (EOs) is increasing due to the antimicrobial potential to be used as “natural” alternative to the chemical preservation of foods [1]. EOs are aromatic oily liquids produced as secondary metabolites in various plants exerting different biological properties, such as antibacterial, antiviral, antimycotic and insecticidal.
