Calibration and Validation of Algorithms for the Estimation of Chlorophyll-A in Inland Waters with Sentinel-2

2018

The Ocean Color 2 (OC2), Ocean Color 3 (OC3) and Dall'Olmo three-band (TBDO) algorithms used for the estimation of the chlorophyll-a concentration [Chl-a] have been calibrated and validated for Sentinel-2 spectral bands. Measurements of in situ chlorophyll-a, radiometry and simulations with HydroLight have been used for this purpose within the Ecological Status of AQuatic Systems Satellites (ESAQS) Project to estimate water quality in aquatic systems in Spain. The results show that Sentinel-2 spectral bands are suitable for studying the chlorophyll-a concentration in inland waters. The TBDO algorithm have been applied to Sentinel-2 images and satisfactory results have been obtained in Albuf…

Understanding maritime transport route choice among Irish exporters: A latent class approach

2021

Abstract The reduction in the level of maritime connectivity between Ireland and mainland Europe has been the focus of concern for Irish exporters since the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union in January 2019. In a post-Brexit scenario, new proposals are being sought to address Ireland's reliance on the UK land-bridge. Policy developments aimed at circumventing the potential negative impact of UK customs checks for Irish exports include the proposals by the European Commission to introduce new direct shipping routes connecting main ports in Ireland with Zeebrugge and Antwerp in Belgium, as well as with Rotterdam in the Netherlands. From a transport policy perspective, f…

Non-parametric probabilistic forecasting of academic performance in Spanish high school using an epidemiological modelling approach

2013

Academic underachievement is a concern of paramount importance in Europe, and particularly in Spain, where around of 30% of the students in the last two courses in high school do not achieve the minimum knowledge academic requirement. In order to analyse this problem, we propose a mathematical model via a system of ordinary differential equations to study the dynamics of the academic performance in Spain. Our approach is based on the idea that both, good and bad study habits, are a mixture of personal decisions and influence of classmates. Moreover, in order to consider the uncertainty in the estimation of model parameters, a bootstrapping approach is employed. This technique permits to for…

Network-Constrained Covariate Coefficient and Connection Sign Estimation

2020

Often, variables are linked to each other via a network. When such a network structure is known, this knowledge can be incorporated into regularized regression settings via a network penalty term. However, when the type of interaction via the network is unknown (that is, whether connections are of an activating or a repressing type), the connection signs have to be estimated simultaneously with the covariate coefficients. This can be done with an algorithm iterating a connection sign estimation step and a covariate coefficient estimation step. We develop such an algorithm and show detailed simulation results and an application forecasting event times. The algorithm performs well in a variet…

Estimation of the Velocity of a Walking Person in Non-Stationary Indoor Environments from the Received RF Signal

2018

Accurate estimation of the time-variant (TV) velocity, i.e., TV speed and TV direction of motion, of walking persons in indoor environment is of great importance in a variety of wireless indoor applications. This paper presents a novel method for estimating the velocity of a walking person in three-dimensional indoor environments, which are assumed to be equipped with a distributed 3 × 3 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. The approach estimates the TV speed, TV vertical angle-of-motion (VAOM), and TV horizontal angle-of-motion (HAOM) by fitting the spectrogram of the complex channel gain of a non-stationary indoor channel model to the spectrogram obtained from the received radio …

Valuing public acceptance of alternative-fuel buses using a Latent Class Tobit model: A case study in Valencia

2020

Abstract The introduction of hybrid electric technology for urban public transportation can be considered a valuable stepping stone to low-carbon mobility. Using the contingent valuation method, a sample of 427 respondents were asked about their willingness to pay for the air pollution reductions associated to a scenario of gradual introduction of hybrid electric buses in Valencia, Spain. Results show that 67% of the respondents are willing to pay extra for the adoption of this electric hybrid technology, being the mean willingness to pay € 0.33 per single bus fare. This would imply a 22% hypothetical increase in current bus fares and shows that public acceptance is critical for the success…

Impact of Transport Costs on International Trade: The Case of Spanish Ceramic Exports

2003

This paper aims to investigate the determinants of maritime and overland transport costs and the role they play in deterring trade across countries. We estimate a transport cost function using data on maritime and overland transport of the ceramic sector (tiles) obtained from interviews held with Spanish logistics operators. We also study the relationship between transport costs and trade and estimate an import demand model for ceramic products. Additionally, we present a discussion on the sensitivity of trade flows and transportation costs to the existence of back-hauling, special conditions for transport and number of reloads.1 The study of modal transport (overland versus maritime) and i…

PA 05-3-0690 Mavie-lab sports: a mhealth for injury prevention and risk management in sport

2018

Computational advances in smart-phone technology and the development of expert systems has been an opportunity to devise the MAVIE-Lab an innovative Mobile Health Application (mHealth) for primary prevention of Home, Leisure and Sport Injuries (HLIs). Here, we present MAVIE-Lab Sports, the first module of the application focused on sports injuries. MAVIE-Lab was developed in the framework of the MAVIE project. A large web-based cohort launched with the objective of prospectively collecting data related to HLIs. A sample size of 26 000 volunteers have been already enrolled in this cohort and the ultimate goal is to recruit 1 00 000 participants in France. As a first step, the MAVIE-Lab will …
