Co-administration of human MSC overexpressing HIF-1α increases human CD34+ cell engraftment in vivo
2021
Abstract Background Poor graft function or graft failure after allogeneic stem cell transplantation is an unmet medical need, in which mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) constitute an attractive potential therapeutic approach. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) overexpression in MSC (HIF-MSC) potentiates the angiogenic and immunomodulatory properties of these cells, so we hypothesized that co-transplantation of MSC-HIF with CD34+ human cord blood cells would also enhance hematopoietic stem cell engraftment and function both in vitro and in vivo. Methods Human MSC were obtained from dental pulp. Lentiviral overexpression of HIF-1α was performed transducing cells with pWPI-green fluorescent pr…
Origin of impulse initiation in the slowly adapting stretch receptor of the crayfish
1974
Characteristic for the crayfish stretch receptor is a gradual decrease in axon diameter up to a stretch of axon about 350 μm away from the soma-axon border. In response to depolarizing currents applied at different positions along the axon this stretch of axon can be localized as the most excitable membrane region. When depolarizing current steps of 10–25 nA intensity are injected into the soma the first impulse is always triggered in the soma (due to sudden rise in the membrane potential) while the second impulse originates at the axon region of highest escitability. As the intensity of the stimulus is increased the site of impulse initiation along the axon shifts nearer to the receptor so…
A polarimetric sensor based on nanoporous free standing membranes
2012
A polarimetric sensor with state of the art sensitivity is developed using free standing porous silicon membranes. The use of an optimized etching receipt greatly reduces the pore roughness. Depolarization factors are thus limited and material birefringence is increased. Free standing membranes are fabricated in n-type substrates and characterized both from the optical and structural point of view. The proposed approach is fully CMOS compatible and can therefore pave the way to the development of cheap microarray that exploits multiplexing capabilities while keeping the amount of analyte required by the analysis down to the microliter level.
MEMS analogous micro-patterning of thermotropic nematic liquid crystalline elastomer films using a fluorinated photoresist and a hard mask process
2017
In this work, we present a method to pattern liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) in the micrometer range without using any mechanical processing steps to prepare micron sized LCE actuators compatible with microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technology. Multi-layer spin-coating processes are developed to synthesise and structure 300–3500 nm thick LCE films. A water soluble sacrificial layer, a photoalignment layer and a LCE formulation, which is polymerised and crosslinked in its liquid crystal phase, are spin-coated successively onto a substrate. A fluorinated photoresist layer is used to structure LCE films with thicknesses up to 700 nm in a photolithographic and etching process. For thicker…
TEM morphological characterization of a one-step self-etching system applied clinically to human caries-affected dentin and deep sound dentin
2013
Purpose: To examine morphologically the hybrid layer of one-step self-etching adhesive, Clearfil S3 Bond (S3bond), in caries-affected dentin (CAD) and deep sound dentin (DSD) cavities performed clinically. For a comparative group, the two-step self etching adhesive Clearfil Protect Bond (Pbond) was used in a similar clinical situation. Methods: This study was carried out on carious and sound teeth clinically selected for extraction. In carious teeth, CAD was obtained by way of subjective criteria by removing infected tissue to form a cavity bottom. DSD was obtained at a depth of 4 mm in the dentin cavity of sound teeth. S3bond and Pbond were applied in the CAD and DSD cavities as indicated …
Effect of Chlorhexidine on durability of two self-etch adhesive systems
2020
Background Despite of the rapid development in the field of dental adhesives, the issue of reduction in dentin bond durability has still not been resolved. The activity of dentinal endogenous enzymes such as MMPs is one of the most important causes of failure in resin composite restorations. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of Chlorhexidine on micro-tensile bond strength of two types of commercially available self-etch adhesives. Material and Methods Twenty four sound and freshly extracted molars were selected. Four standardized flat mid-coronal dentinal disks were prepared from each tooth. The specimens were randomly assigned to 6 groups (n=16). Groups A(control group…
