From arsenic to DDT: Pesticides, Fascism and the invisibility of toxic risks in the early years of Francoist Spain (1939-1953)

This paper reviews the way in which Spanish agriculture climbed onto the pesticide treadmill. We claim that Fascist policies and expert advice assembled in the early 1940s accelerated the introduction of pesticides into Spanish agriculture and promoted the emergence of the Spanish pesticide industry in the times of autarky. Agricultural engineers were the key protagonists in this process, but other human and non-human actors also played a pivotal role: a new pest (the Colorado beetle), Francoist politicians, farmers, landowners and industry managers. Synteesin laatiminen internetteksteistä ja lukemisen haasteet kuudesluokkalaisilla oppilailla

Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin lukusujuvuuden ja luetunymmärtämisen yhteyttä synteesin laatimiseen internetteksteistä kuudesluokkalaisilla oppilailla. Lisäksi selvitettiin, miten ne oppilaat, joiden lukusujuvuus tai luetunymmärtäminen oli heikkoa, suoriutuivat synteesin laatimisessa suhteessa muihin oppilaisiin. Tutkimus toteutettiin osana Suomen Akatemian rahoittamaa eSeekhanketta ja siihen osallistui 440 kuudesluokkalaista. DNA barcoding facilitates many evolutionary and ecological studies, including the examination of the dietary diversity of herbivores. In this study, we present a survey of ecological associations between herbivorous beetles and host plants from seriously threatened European steppic grasslands. We determined host plants for the majority (65%) of steppic leaf beetles (55 species) and weevils (59) known from central Europe using two barcodes (trnL and rbcL) and two sequencing strategies (Sanger for mono/oligophagous species and Illumina for polyphagous taxa). Abstract A collection of 160 isolates of rhizobia nodulating Phaseolus vulgaris in three geographical regions in Tunisia was characterized by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplified 16S rDNA, nifH and nodC genes. Nine groups of rhizobia were delineated: Rhizobium gallicum biovar (bv.) gallicum, Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. phaseoli and bv. viciae, Rhizobium etli bv. phaseoli, Rhizobium giardinii bv. giardinii, and four groups related to species of the genus Sinorhizobium, Sinorhizobium meliloti, Sinorhizobium medicae and Sinorhizobium fredii. Summary Variation in the strength of age-dependent natural selection shapes differences in ageing rates across species and populations. Likewise, sexual selection can promote divergent patterns of senescence across the sexes. Możliwość wykonywania, za pomocą mikrotomu typu „core--microtome”,preparatów z całych wywiertów wygenerowała problem związany ze stabilizacją preparatów podczas procesu pozyskiwania i zapis ich obrazu. Zaproponowane ostatnio dwa adaptery do długich preparatów mikroskopowych rozwiązały problem ich stabilizacji oraz umożliwiły kontrolę pozycji docelowych fragmentów w polu widzenia obiektywu. Konstrukcje te nie rozwiązują wszystkich potrzeb pojawiających się podczas pozyskiwania obrazu na potrzeby ilościowej anatomii drewna. Zbiorowiska z klasy Utricularietea intermedio-minoris Den Hartog et Segal 1964 em. Pietsch 1965 należą do wyspecjalizowanych pod względem ekologicznym fitocenoz, występujących w wodach oligotroficznych, mezotroficznych oraz dystroficznych na podłożu torfowym. W Polsce należą do grupy zbiorowisk bardzo słabo zbadanych. Celem pracy było przedstawienie aktualnego rozmieszczenia i charakterystyki fitosocjologicznej zespołów z klasy Utricularietea intermedio-minoris, których fitocenozy stwierdzono w latach 2000–2015 w południowo-zachodniej Polsce na terenie stawów hodowlanych województw: dolnośląskiego i opolskiego.
