Measuring consciousness in dreams: the lucidity and consciousness in dreams scale.

In this article, we present results from an interdisciplinary research project aimed at assessing consciousness in dreams. For this purpose, we compared lucid dreams with normal non-lucid dreams from REM sleep. Both lucid and non-lucid dreams are an important contrast condition for theories of waking consciousness, giving valuable insights into the structure of conscious experience and its neural correlates during sleep. Neural net classification of REM sleep based on spectral measures as compared to nonlinear measures

In various studies the implementation of nonlinear and nonconventional measures has significantly improved EEG (electroencephalogram) analyses as compared to using conventional parameters alone. A neural network algorithm well approved in our laboratory for the automatic recognition of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep was investigated in this regard. Imaging techniques have been used to elucidate the neural correlates that underlie deception. The scientifically best understood paradigm for the detection of deception, however, the guilty knowledge test (GKT), was rarely used in imaging studies. Task-induced deactivation in diverse brain systems correlates with interindividual differences in distinct autonomic indices

AbstractNeuroimaging research has shown that different cognitive tasks induce relatively specific activation patterns, as well as less task-specific deactivation patterns. Here we examined whether individual differences in Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) activity during task performance correlate with the magnitude of task-induced deactivation. In an fMRI study, participants performed a continuous mental arithmetic task in a task/rest block design, while undergoing combined fMRI and heart / respiration rate acquisitions using photoplethysmograph and respiration belt. Dopamine neurotransmission influences those cognitive processes, which are generally regarded as prefrontal cortical functions. Emotional reactivity in chronic schizophrenia: structural and functional brain correlates and the influence of adverse childhood experiences

The current literature concerning neural circuitry for emotions supports dysregulations of cortico-limbic networks, but gives contrasting results. Design and validation of a neuroprosthesis for the treatment of upper limb tremor.

Pathological tremor is the most prevalent movement disorder. In spite of the existence of various treatments for it, tremor poses a functional problem to a large proportion of patients. This paper presents the design and implementation of a novel neuroprosthesis for tremor management. In both monkeys and humans, reaching-related sensorimotor transformations involve the activation of a wide fronto-parietal network. Age-related differences in the neural correlates of remembering time-based intentions.

The present study used event-related potentials (ERPs) to explore the effect of age on the neural correlates of monitoring processes involved in time-based prospective memory.In both younger and older adults, the addition of a time-based prospective memory task to an ongoing task led to a sustained ERP activity broadly distributed over the scalp. Older adults, however, did not exhibit the slow wave activity observed in younger adults over prefrontal regions, which is considered to be associated with retrieval mode.
