Water-organic systems in closed-loop reverse electrodialysis for lower regeneration requirements

2016

Salinity Gradient Power (SGP) is an emerging opportunity to produce sustainable energy. Among the different SGP technologies, Reverse ElectroDialysis (RED) looks very promising. In a RED system the salinity gradient between two different solutions is used to directly produce electricity. Closed-loop RED is an innovative process, combining a RED unit with a regeneration system. If low grade waste-heat is used for the regeneration stage, in which the initial concentrations of the solutions exiting the RED unit are restored, the closed-loop can be seen as a RED-heat-engine able to convert thermal energy into electricity. The aim of this work is to perform a preliminary analysis of a regenerati…

Fabrication of Electrical Contacts on Pyramid-Shaped NTD-Ge Microcalorimeters Using Free-Standing Shadow Masks

2011

In our effort to fabricate arrays of germanium microcalorimeters for X-ray detection, a truncated square-based pyramid shape has been identified as a suitable geometry for the sensors. It allows to obtain a uniform current spreading across each sensor, and represents a good compromise between having a large support area for the radiation absorber and for maintaining an overall small bolometer volume. This three-dimensional geometry, however, does not allow to create the electrical contacts for the sensors using a regular photoresist-based lift-off metallization process. In this paper we show how to deposit metal contacts on the lateral faces of the pyramidal sensors by metal evaporation thr…

trans-4-tert-Butyl-1-methylcyclohexanol hemihydrate

2007

The title compound, C11H22O·0.5H2O, is a hemihydrate of trans-4-tert-butyl-1-methylcyclohexanol, containing one water and two organic molecules in the asymmetric unit. Crystals were obtained from an NMR sample by very slow evaporation of the solvent. In the solid state, the title compound forms a double-layered structure with the organic and water molecules connected by O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

The performance of the cryogenic buffer-gas stopping cell of SHIPTRAP

2018

Direct high-precision mass spectrometry of the heaviest elements with SHIPTRAP, at GSI in Darmstadt, Germany, requires high efficiency to deal with the low production rates of such exotic nuclides. A second-generation gas stopping cell, operating at cryogenic temperatures, was developed and recently integrated into the relocated system to boost the overall efficiency. Offline measurements using 223Ra and 225Ac recoil-ion sources placed inside the gas volume were performed to characterize the gas stopping cell with respect to purity and extraction efficiency. In addition, a first online test using the fusion-evaporation residue 254No was performed, resulting in a combined stopping and extrac…

Supra-aggregates of fiber-forming anisotropic molecules.

2006

In this paper, the self-organization of fiber-forming anisotropic molecules is inspected both theoretically and experimentally. In the first part, a theoretical model which extends the de Gennes theory of thin films to assemblies of strongly anisotropic molecules is reported. The model predicts that solid supported thin films made up of fiber-forming discotic molecules can grow with both tangential and radial arrangement of the fibers, respectively leading to the formation of compact and holed supra- aggregates. These last systems form according to the following picture. The tangential growth minimizes the number of unfavorable free ends but introduces elastic strain especially in the centr…

Theory of the evaporation/condensation transition of equilibrium droplets in finite volumes

2003

Abstract A phenomenological theory of phase coexistence of finite systems near the coexistence curve that occurs in the thermodynamic limit is formulated for the generic case of d-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising lattices of linear dimension L with magnetization m slightly less than mcoex. It is argued that in the limit L→∞ an unconventional first-order transition occurs at a characteristic value mt

Surface Development of (As2S3)1–x (AgI)x Thin Films for Gas Sensor Applications

2011

Thin (As2S3)100−x(AgI)x (x = 0–40) films were deposited by thermal vacuum evaporation from the respective bulk glasses; their structure and morphology before and after illumination with light have been studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As-deposited films show fractional evaporation and surface inhomogeneities but after illumination they become uniform on the surface and in the depth as revealed by SEM top-view and cross-section images. Mechanical parameters like stress and microhardness of as-prepared and illuminated films were also investigated. The results from the stress measurements show variation in both the sign and the magnitude of the values with increasing AgI content …

Chromospheric evaporation and phase mixing of Alfvén waves in coronal loops

2020

Phase mixing of Alfv\'en waves has been studied extensively as a possible coronal heating mechanism but without the full thermodynamic consequences considered self-consistently. It has been argued that in some cases, the thermodynamic feedback of the heating could substantially affect the transverse density gradient and even inhibit the phase mixing process. In this paper, we use MHD simulations with the appropriate thermodynamical terms included to quantify the evaporation following heating by phase mixing of Alfv\'en waves in a coronal loop and the effect of this evaporation on the transverse density profile. The numerical simulations were performed using the Lare2D code. We set up a 2D l…

Preparation of thin films of the ternary heavy fermion system CeNi 2 Ge 2

1998

Ge2 layers on W(110). In order to produce well-ordered and atomically clean surfaces of the Ce-based intermetallic system the growth was performed under UHV conditions (p<2×10-11 mbar). Both the polycrystalline CeNi2Ge2 compound and the individual elements Ce, Ni, and Ge were used as evaporants. The characterisation of the layers was made with LEED, SEM, and XPS. We find a significant influence of the substrate temperature and the evaporation power on the growth characteristics. The compound material CeNi2Ge2 exhibits complicated behaviour when evaporated. Under carefully selected growth conditions we obtain well-ordered films with a stoichiometry of Ce:Ni:Ge=1:2:2 and a (001) oriented surf…

Symmetries and solvable models for evaporating 2D black holes

1997

We study the evaporation process of a 2D black hole in thermal equilibrium when the ingoing radiation is suddenly switched off. We also introduce global symmetries of generic 2D dilaton gravity models which generalize the extra symmetry of the CGHS model. © Elsevier Science B.V
