Transmission of Sovereign Risk in the Euro Crisis

We assess the role of financial linkages in the transmission of sovereign risk in the Euro Crisis. Building on the narrative approach by Romer and Romer (1989), we use financial news to identify structural shocks in a vector autoregressive model of daily sovereign CDS premia for eleven European countries. To estimate how these shocks transmit across borders, we use data on cross-country bank exposures to sovereign debt. Our results indicate that cross-border financial exposures constitute important transmission channels. A 10-percent decrease in the exposure to Greek debt reduces, on average, the transmission rate of sovereign risk by 9.4 percent. Decomposing these effects, we find that exp…
Can an unglamorous non-event affect prices? The role of newspapers

AbstractOur paper offers evidence that the print media can affect stock prices by covering public information. After price-to-book value figures of Italian listed shares were first published on the major national financial newspaper, the prices of value stocks did, on average, show a positive reaction. The price reaction was limited to small caps stocks and disappeared within three weeks. Over the period of analysis, we could not find any abnormal behaviour of the returns of small and value stocks on other European markets. Background The management of early-onset scoliosis (EOS) remains a serious challenge in pediatric orthopedics. The growth-guidance system (GGS) is a surgical option that allows continuous growth along a rod, averting the need for repeated operative lengthening. Objectives The objective of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of the GGS in the treatment of EOS. Material and methods A prospective study, including 81 patients from 4 departments treated with this method from 2013 to 2015, was conducted with a minimum follow-up period of 24 months. Reintegration into society is one of the main purposes of post-stroke rehabilitation. The experiences of clients returning home after a stroke have been studied before. There is, however, little knowledge about activities carried out during home-based rehabilitation interventions and about the involvement of clients in the process. This study focused on clients' experiences of a 3-month individualised, home-based rehabilitation programme supervised by a multidisciplinary team. Major life changes may cause an autobiographical rupture and a need to work on one’s narrative identity. This article introduces a new qualitative interview methodology originally developed to facilitate 10 prostate cancer patients and five spouses in the (re)creation of their life narratives in the context of a series of interventive interviews conducted over a timespan of several months. Abstract Background Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease caused by parasites that infest open water sources such as rivers and dams may increase susceptibility to HIV. Mass-treatment with praziquantel tablets, recommended by the World Health Organization reduces the prevalence of schistosomiasis. The goal in endemic areas is 75% treatment participation in every treatment round (e.g. yearly). However, in rural Ugu district, KwaZulu-Natal, South-Africa there was low participation among pupils in a Department of Health Mass-Treatment Campaign for schistosomiasis. The focus is on the negotiations around the multiple meanings assigned to place of residency among older people — in a situation where the official policy objectives of growing old in one's own home are not achieved.
