Crossing borders without travel : virtual exchange practices for students
2019
Virtual Exchange (VE) offers unique educational experiences at the intersection of the digital, the social, and the intercultural. It re-situates learning by creating an inclusive transnational learning space, where the participants move across and beyond cultural, curricular and individual boundaries. nonPeerReviewed
Do Online Travel Communities Matter? A Literature Review
2017
The emergence of social media has migrated consumers from peripheral stakeholders to strategic partners whose inputs are critical for successful product and service innovation. Online communities provide a platform for aggregation of consumers from diverse backgrounds; online travel communities (OTCs) have recently attracted growing interest in the information systems and tourism literature because their unofficial boundary spanning role influences consumer interest in destinations. Importantly, this literature remains largely fragmented because of conflicting findings. The present study seeks to integrate prior OTC research in order to understand the motivations and consequences (negative …
Against all odds : Problem-solving as a skill critical to virtual exchange
2021
Virtual Exchange (VE) brings together groups of learners from different geographical locations and cultural backgrounds to engage them in online intercultural collaboration and interaction. Although VE projects are designed and implemented by educators as part of the students’ educational programmes, they often go beyond the setting of traditional courses offered by higher education institutions. Because of their innovative nature, VEs require the students to leave their comfort zone and think outside the box to develop new creative strategies of communication and collaboration in order to find solutions to problems that crop up in this new learning environment. This presentation showcases …
Waste heat recovery from a marine waste incinerator using a thermoelectric generator
2012
Published version of an article published in the journal: Journal of Electronic Materials. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11664-012-2009-6 A marine waste incinerator has been evaluated for waste heat harvesting using thermoelectric generators (TEG). The application has been evaluated using mathematical modeling to optimize the heat exchanger and some vital design parameters of the TEG. The calculation shows that it is possible to extract 58 kW el at a price of 6.6 US$/W from an 850-kW th incinerator when optimizing for maximum power. However, minimizing the cost, it is possible to get 25 kW el at a price of 2.5 US$/W. A trade-off between the two targets lea…
The linguistic construction of confirmation niches in online comment sequences
2018
This study starts from the consideration that new media are platforms where communication and language are re-negotiated to adapt new frames (e.g. new politeness, multimodal exchanges) and, in particular, that fora are participatory frameworks, that represent a mined engagement in writing practices (Stommel and Koole, 2010). Discussions are organised as multiparty conversations on several topics, written by participants (i.e website users accessing a parenting forum) at different levels of expertise about health issues (mostly earned through their experience of parenthood; Kata, 2010). the challenge in this paper is : 1) to study asynchronous forum as a talk-in -interaction venue, where seq…
Asking for medical help by posting on the net: genre, functions and ethical issues
2014
On the basis of the growing of the number of sites related to health issues and online conversation, statistical research tend to acknowledge that the communication practices of health message boards have significant roles to play in the era of online counseling (Anderson, 2003; Kim & Yoon, 2011; Mulholland, 1999; Eysenbach and Diepgen 1999; O'Connor and Johanson 2000; Shuyler and Knight 2003; Gooden and Winefield 2007). However, one of the main worries concerning these spaces has been the uncontrolled information that is provided by users with no defined roles and who do not/cannot take responsibility for what they say. Previous studies were intended to explore how people discussing health…
The Trope of Sight in North American Whiteness Studies
2017
The trope of sight has been the central metaphor in North American whiteness studies sińce its very inception, that is, already before whiteness studies emerged as a separate field of study. The centrality of the trope stems not only ffom a particular applicability of the sight metaphor to render subject-object relations, but also ffom the unique presence of “sight” in the very relations between racial groups in the United States, in particular Alfican Americans, and whites. Originally, minorities were cast as objects of the gaze, while white people as subjects of the gaze, exercising the power to look, survey and pass judgment. Apart ffom exposing practices of looking employed by whites, w…
Inspiriting Innovation: The Effects of Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) on Innovative Behavior as Mediated by Mindfulness and Work Engagement
2021
Continuous innovation has become a key to gaining a sustainable competitive advantage for organizations in the 21st century. By focusing on the underlying mechanisms (i.e., mindfulness and work engagement) by which it works, this study addresses the quality of leader–member relationships and their relevance for innovation in the workplace. Using a sample of 210 employees from 17 Spanish companies, a two-wave longitudinal design evaluated the mediational roles of mindfulness and engagement between leader–member exchange (LMX) quality and innovative work behavior (IWB) in an organizational context. Over the course of a year, two questionnaires were administered to measure LMX quality, mindful…
The impact of various cations on the sorption of manganese in the thallus of freshwater algae Spirogyra sp. and sea algae Palmaria palmata
2014
Do badań wykorzystano słodkowodne glony Spirogyra sp., które w warunkach laboratoryjnych eksponowano w roztworach chlorku manganu o różnym udziale innych kationów, m.in. metali ciężkich i makroelementów. Wykazano, że niektóre metale ciężkie mogą desorbować mangan związany powierzchniowo n…
Game of Thrones -pelin Let's Play -videot ja populaarikulttuurin vastaanotto esityksenä
2019
Tutkimusmenetelmänäni on Game of Thrones -videopelistä tehtyjen Let’s Play -videoiden analysointi e…
