Violation of the equivalence principle from light scalar dark matter
2018
In this paper, we study the local observational consequences of a violation of the Einstein Equivalence Principle induced by models of light scalar Dark Matter (DM). We focus on two different models where the scalar field couples linearly or quadratically to the standard model of matter fields. For both these cases, we derive the solutions of the scalar field. We also derive from first principles the expressions for two types of observables: (i) the local comparison of two atomic sensors that are differently sensitive to the constants of Nature and (ii) the local differential acceleration between two test-masses with different compositions. For the linear coupling, we recover that the signa…
Isolation and characterization of 10 highly polymorphic di- and trinucleotide microsatellite markers in the mayfly Ameletus inopinatus (Ephemeroptera…
2008
We describe the isolation of ten polymorphic microsatellite loci from the mayfly Ameletus inopinatus. Loci had di- or trinucleotide repeat motifs and were highly variable with three to 17 alleles (mean = 7.15). Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.143 to 0.905. One locus (Ami_202) showed significant deviation from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium in one population, but no evidence for null alleles. One locus (Ami_73) was significantly linked with three other loci. The remaining nine loci should prove highly informative for population genetic studies.
Why Magnus expansion

Fatigue crack propagation from a cold-worked hole
2007
Abstract The cold expansion process is widely used to enhance the fatigue life of structures with fastener holes. Various studies assert that the cold expansion improves the fatigue strength of fastener holes; however, the improvement of fatigue life is difficult to quantify. Therefore, the influence on fatigue life of cold-worked process was studied by numerical and experimental tests. Then, a parametric study on material hardening behavior and Bauschinger’s parameter was performed for several loading conditions in order to determine their effect on crack growth propagation. The results of the numerical tests have exhibited a good prediction of the fatigue life of the component.
Global Pinoys: The Archipelago of Migration
2017
The Republic of the Philippines is one of the top exporters of migrant labor throughout the world. Millions of Filipino overseas workers can be found in North America, the Middle East, Western Europe, Australia and Asia (Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Malaysia). Since the 1970s, the Philippine government has encouraged labor migration as a way to alleviate unemployment at home and to gather remittances used to boost spending in the domestic economy. The government’s Philippine Overseas Employment Agency manages the implementation of labor agreements with partner countries and exerts some control on the myriad of private agencies recruiting Philippine labor for foreign jobs. Many expatr…
1.6 GHz VLBI observations of SN 1979C: almost-free expansion
2009
We report on 1.6 GHz Very-Long-Baseline-Interferometry (VLBI) observations of supernova SN 1979C made on 18 November 2002. We derive a model-dependent supernova size. We also present a reanalysis of VLBI observations made by us on June 1999 and by other authors on February 2005. We conclude that, contrary to our earlier claim of strong deceleration in the expansion, SN 1979C has been undergoing almost-free expansion ($m = 0.91\pm0.09$; $R \propto t^m$) for over 25 years.
Spontaneous Scalarization of Charged Black Holes
2018
Extended scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet (eSTGB) gravity has been recently argued to exhibit spontaneous scalarisation of vacuum black holes (BHs). A similar phenomenon can be expected in a larger class of models, which includes e.g. Einstein-Maxwell-scalar (EMS) models, where spontaneous scalarisation of electrovacuum BHs should occur. EMS models have no higher curvature corrections, a technical simplification over eSTGB models that allows us to investigate, fully non-linearly, BH scalarisation in two novel directions. Firstly, numerical simulations in spherical symmetry show, dynamically, that Reissner-Nordstr\"om (RN) BHs evolve into a perturbatively stable scalarised BH. Secondly, we compute…
Hadron structure in tau -> KK pi nu_tau decays
2009
We analyze the hadronization structure of both vector and axial-vector currents leading to tau -> KK pi nu(tau) decays. At leading order in the 1/N-C expansion, and considering only the contribution of the lightest resonances, we work out, within the framework of the resonance chiral Lagrangian, the structure of the local vertices involved in those processes. The couplings in the resonance theory are constrained by imposing the asymptotic behavior of vector and axial-vector spectral functions ruled by QCD. In this way we predict the hadron spectra and conclude that, contrary to previous assertions, the vector contribution dominates by far over the axial-vector one in all KK pi charge channe…
tau -> pi pi pi nu(tau) decays and the a(1)(1260) off-shell width revisited
2009
The tau -> pi pi pi nu(tau) decay is driven by the hadronization of the axial-vector current. Within the resonance chiral theory, and considering the large-N-C expansion, this process has been studied in Ref. [1] (D. Gomez Dumm, A. Pich, J. Portoles, 2004). In the light of later developments we revise here this previous work by including a new off-shell width for the lightest a(1) resonance that provides a good description of the tau -> pi pi pi nu(tau) spectrum and branching ratio. We also consider the role of the rho(1450) resonance in these observables. Thus we bring in an overall description of the tau -> pi pi pi nu(tau) process in excellent agreement with our present experimental know…
