The impact of visual working memory capacity on the filtering efficiency of emotional face distractors.

2018

Emotional faces can serve as distractors for visual working memory (VWM) tasks. An event-related potential called contralateral delay activity (CDA) can measure the filtering efficiency of face distractors. Previous studies have investigated the influence of VWM capacity on filtering efficiency of simple neutral distractors but not of face distractors. We measured the CDA indicative of emotional face filtering during a VWM task related to facial identity. VWM capacity was measured in a separate colour change detection task, and participants were divided to high- and low-capacity groups. The high-capacity group was able to filter out distractors similarly irrespective of its facial emotion. …

Psycholinguistic norms for 320 fixed expressions (idioms and proverbs) in French

2018

International audience; We provide psycholinguistic norms for a new set of 160 French idiomatic expressions and 160 proverbs: knowledge, predictability, literality, compositionality, subjective and objective frequency, familiarity, age of acquisition (AoA), and length. Different analyses (reliability, descriptive statistics, correlations) performed on the norms are reported and discussed. The norms can be downloaded as supplemental material.

Emotional communication in the context of joint attention for food stimuli: Effects on attentional and affective processing

2014

Guided by distinct theoretical frameworks (the embodiment theories, shared-signal hypothesis, and appraisal theories), we examined the effects of gaze direction and emotional expressions (joy, disgust, and neutral) of virtual characters on attention orienting and affective reactivity of participants while they were engaged in joint attention for food stimuli contrasted by preference (disliked, moderately liked, and liked). The participants were exposed to videos of avatars looking at food and displaying facial expressions with their gaze directed either toward the food only or toward the food and participants consecutively. We recorded eye-tracking responses, heart rate, facial electromyogr…

Increased amygdala and parahippocampal gyrus activation in schizophrenic patients with auditory hallucinations: An fMRI study using independent compo…

2010

Objective: Hallucinations in patients with schizophrenia have strong emotional connotations. Functional neuroimaging techniques have been widely used to study brain activity in patients with schizophrenia with hallucinations or emotional impairments. However, few of these Studies have investigated the association between hallucinations and emotional dysfunctions using an emotional auditory paradigm. Independent component analysis (ICA) is an analysis method that is especially useful for decomposing activation during complex cognitive tasks in which multiple operations occur simultaneously. Our aim in this Study is to analyze brain activation after the presentation of emotional auditory stim…

The Transfer Function of Non-Stationary Indoor Channels and its Relationship to System Functions of LFMCW Radars

2021

This paper studies the relationship between the time-variant (TV) channel transfer function (CTF) of non-stationary indoor channels and the system functions of linear frequency modulated continuous waves (LFMCW) radars. To do so, we consider a moving person/object in indoor environments, which is modelled by a cluster of moving point scatterers. It is shown that the TVCTF can be obtained from the beat signal of LFMCW radar systems. Analytical expressions are derived for the TV demodulated radar response, the complex channel gain, and the TV Doppler-delay profile. A relationship between the presented results and existing non-stationary indoor channel models assuming pulsed wave systems is al…

UNESCO and cultural diversity: democratisation, commodification or governmentalisation of culture?

2012

The Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) was first adopted by its member states in October 2005. The document defines UNESCO's general principles and conceptualisations regarding culture, cultural diversity and expressions. In order to better manage culture, cultural expressions refer above all to goods and services of the markets, but another, more universally humanitarian and participatory aspect is also present. For the United Nations member states and especially countries that ratified it, the Convention offers policy and legal guidelines to support all forms o…

Dynamics of a single trapped ion in an optical underdamped cavity

2003

The dynamics of a single trapped ion placed inside a high Q optical cavity is studied in presence of cavity losses and far from the Lamb-Dicke regime. In the underdamped cavity limit, analytical results for describing the dynamics of the system are derived making use of the secular approximation. Our method allows to obtain analytical expressions for the time evolution of the joint vibration-photon number distribution and for the occupation probability of the upper electronic state of the ion.

Developing cultural awareness in Early Childhood Education through children’s songs

2021

Vibrations of a continuous web on elastic supports

2017

We consider an infinite, homogenous linearly elastic beam resting on a system of linearly elastic supports, as an idealized model for a paper web in the middle of a cylinder-based dryer section. We obtain closed-form analytical expressions for the eigenfrequencies and the eigenmodes. The frequencies increase as the support rigidity is increased. Each frequency is bounded from above by the solution with absolutely rigid supports, and from below by the solution in the limit of vanishing support rigidity. Thus in a real system, the natural frequencies will be lower than predicted by commonly used models with rigid supports. peerReviewed
