Inner ear function in children with Fabry disease

Aim: The prevalence of hearing loss in patients with Fabry disease is still uncertain. This paper examines hearing loss in a group of young patients with Fabry disease. Methods: A clinical ear nose and throat examination,pure-tone air and bone conduction audiometry, speech audiometry and middle ear testing (tympanometry and acoustic reflex testing) were carried out in four girls and two boys with Fabry disease (age, 7-17 years), receiving enzyme replacement therapy (ERT). Cognitive skills in achondroplasia

Increased intracranial pressure and ventricular and subarachnoidal dilatation are common manifestations in achondroplasia. They rarely lead to major neurologic and/or psychomotor deficits and neurosurgical intervention is seldom needed. The present study was undertaken to detect signs of minor cerebral dysfunction and discuss possibilities of their prevention. A high volume of military training has been shown to compromise muscle strength development. We examined effects of added low-volume resistance training during special military training (ST) period, which took place after basic training period. Male conscripts (n = 25) were assigned to standardized ST with added resistance training group (TG, n = 13) and group with standardized ST only (control) (CG, n = 12). Initial experience with the Sophono Alpha 1 osseointegrated implant.

In the last several years, bone anchored hearing aids have proven to be useful in treating conductive and mixed unilateral or bilateral hearing loss, as well as for sensorineural unilateral hearing loss. The Sophono Alpha 1 model has the advantage of not requiring an abutment, with it being coupled by magnetism instead. We report the cases of 3 infants with congenital malformations of external and middle ear. Audiometry showed conductive hearing loss. All 3 patients were implanted with Alpha 1 model (Sophono). Psychological and physical well-being in hearing-impaired children

Summary Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychological and physical well-being in 6–11-year-old hearing-impaired children. Methods The cohort consisted of 70 boys and 61 girls who either attended a special school for deaf children ( n  = 78) or a mainstream school ( n  = 53). We used the FKSI (Frankfurt Self-Concept Scales for Children). Results Children in special schools saw themselves in a less favourable light than children in mainstream schools. They were less confident and less assertive. They reached lower scores in making friends, and were more anxious and sad.
