Catechol-O-Methyltransferase (COMT) Val158Met Polymorphism and Eating Disorders: Data From a New Biobank and Meta-Analysis of Previously Published St…
2017
Objectives: We investigated whether catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) Val158Met polymorphism is associated with eating disorders (EDs). Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search of studies published until 15 January 2017 and added data from the Italian ‘Biobanca Veneta per i Disturbi Alimentari’ biobank, performing a meta-analysis comparing COMT Val158Met genotype and allele frequencies in EDs and anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN) patients versus controls. Results: Ten studies plus Biobanca Veneta per i Disturbi Alimentari (ED: n = 920, controls: n = 261 controls) with 3541 ED patients (AN = 2388; BN = 233) and 3684 controls were included. There were no significant …
Molecular bases of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder: shedding light on the darkness
2017
International audience; Eating-disorders (EDs) consequences to human health are devastating, involving social, mental, emotional, physical and life-threatening aspects, concluding on impairment and death in cases of extreme anorexia nervosa. It also implies that people suffering an ED need to find psychiatric and psychological help as soon as possible to achieve a fully physical and emotional recovery. Unfortunately, to date, there is a crucial lack of efficient clinical treatment to these disorders. In this review, we present an overview concerning the actual pharmacological and psychological treatments, the knowledge of cells, circuits, neuropeptides, neuromodulators and hormones in the h…
Is the selective information processing of food and body words specific to patients with eating disorders?
1993
The selective processing of food- and body size-related information was investigated using a modified version of the Stroop task. Anorexic and bulimic patients and matched female controls were compared on the basis of categorical (diagnosis), dimensional (restraint and drive for thinness) criteria, or both. The findings suggest that the phenomenon assessed by the Stroop paradigm is not exclusive to patients with a clinical eating disorder, but patients and those control subjects who are restrained eaters with a high drive for thinness share a selective processing of information related to shape and eating. The discussion focuses on the implications of these findings. © 1993 by lohn Wiley & …
Transforming Experience: The Potential of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality for Enhancing Personal and Clinical Change
2016
During life, many personal changes occur. These include changing house, school, work, and even friends and partners. However, the daily experience shows clearly that, in some situations, subjects are unable to change even if they want to. The recent advances in psychology and neuroscience are now providing a better view of personal change, the change affecting our assumptive world: (a) the focus of personal change is reducing the distance between self and reality (conflict); (b) this reduction is achieved through (1) an intense focus on the particular experience creating the conflict or (2) an internal or external reorganization of this experience; (c) personal change requires a progression…

Analysis of Body Perception, Preworkout Meal Habits and Bone Resorption in Child Gymnasts
2021
The beneficial effects of physical activity on body image perception and bone are debated among artistic gymnasts. Gymnasts seem to be at greater risk of developing body dissatisfaction, eating disorders and osteoporosis due to inadequate nutrition and attention to the appearance of the body. The objective of this work was to investigate the association between the artistic gymnast and a more favorable body image compared to their sedentary peers and if a preworkout high-carbohydrate meal (HCM
Clinical features of the impact of eating disorders on the results of 13C-methacetin breath test for assessment of liver function in girls with anore…
2019
Introduction: This study was designed to assess the influence of chosen aspects of anorexia nervosa eating disorders (AN ED) on 13C-methacetin breath test (MBT) results. Material and methods: We investigated a group of 81 girls, including 41 patients with confirmed diagnosis of AN ED. The study group was divided in two subgroups. According to the DSM-5 classification, 25 underweight patients met the criteria of anorexia nervosa (AN), and 16 girls with BMI value > 5th percentile for age and sex were diagnosed as atypical anorexia nervosa (AAN). Laboratory tests assessing the liver function and the MBT were performed in all the participants of the study. Results: In all healthy females the va…
What happens in the course of body exposure?
2007
Abstract Objective Though body exposure seems to enhance outcome in cognitive-behavioural therapy of anorexia and bulimia nervosa, the underlying mechanisms are still unknown. Methods Participants with eating disorders (ED; n = 21) and normal controls (NC; n = 28) were exposed to their own bodies in front of a mirror for 40 minutes under standardized conditions. Emotions, cognitions, and saliva cortisol were assessed every 10 minutes during body exposure. Heart rate and skin conductance were recorded continuously. Results ED showed higher negative emotional and cognitive responses to body exposure compared to NC, whereas no group differences were found for physiological reactions. In the co…
