CO2 capture from biogas: Absorbent selection

The development of proper biogas upgrading technology offers a viable means to utilize biogas in conventional power systems. In this paper, various molecular and ionic solvent systems were evaluated for CO2 removal from biogas in a loop reactor system. The performance of amine solutions, ionic liquids and their mixtures, amino acid salts and solutions blended with piperazine was compared in terms of their CO2 loading capacity. The experimental results revealed that addition of small amounts of piperazine can increase on average by 30 vol% the efficiency of above-mentioned solutions. Multiarm star polyglycerol-block-poly(HEMA) as a versatile precursor for the preparation of micellar nanocapsules with different properties

Well-defined multiarm star polymer with hyperbranched polyglycerol as core and poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) as arms were used as precursor for the preparation of inverted and aqueous micellar nanocapsules. The partial modification of the hydroxyl groups of PHEMA arms with aliphatic chains led to the formation of inverted micellar nanocapsules. The hydrophilic dye encapsulation capacity of the inverted micelles can be enhanced significantly by transforming the inner hydroxyl groups of PHEMA arms into quaternized amine groups. Ionic liquids versus amine solutions in biogas upgrading: the level of volatile organic compounds

Background: This article provides information related to the occurrence of volatile organic compounds before and after biogas purification, by means of both aqueous amine solutions and ionic liquids. Results & discussion: Encouraging results were obtained. Under the experimental conditions, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ionic liquid appeared to perform at least two-times better than aqueous amines solutions, since it captured 65 wt% of the identified volatile organic compounds, while aqueous amine solutions retained around 35 wt% only. Impact of Different Building Materials on Summer Comfort in Low-Energy Buildings

Abstract The aim of the current paper is to analyse thermal comfort and overheating risks in the low-energy buildings in a summer season under Latvian climate conditions both experimentally and numerically. An interior temperature and relative humidity are analysed under free-floating conditions. Two cases are analysed: in one case, the solar influence through the window is taken into account; in the other this influence is omitted. This paper focuses on the long-term monitoring of thermal comfort and discomfort parameters in five small test buildings equipped with different heating and cooling systems. Calculations of predicted percentage of dissatisfied people (PPD) index and discomfort factors are provided for the room in winter season running three different heating systems – electric heater, air-air heat pump and air-water heat pump, as well as for the summer cooling with split type air conditioning systems. Mathematical Model of Solid Food Pasteurization by Ohmic Heating: Influence of Process Parameters

Pasteurization of a solid food undergoing ohmic heating has been analysed by means of a mathematical model, involving the simultaneous solution of Laplace’s equation, which describes the distribution of electrical potential within a food, the heat transfer equation, using a source term involving the displacement of electrical potential, the kinetics of inactivation of microorganisms likely to be contaminating the product. A simulation of disagreement for control of rational cheating in peer review

Understanding the peer review process could help research and shed light on the mechanisms that underlie crowdsourcing. In this paper, we present an agent-based model of peer review built on three entities - the paper, the scientist and the conference. Efficient generation of energetic ions in multi-ion plasmas by radio-frequency heating

We describe a new technique for the efficient generation of high-energy ions with electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves in multi-ion plasmas. The discussed ‘three-ion’ scenarios are especially suited for strong wave absorption by a very low number of resonant ions. To observe this effect, the plasma composition has to be properly adjusted, as prescribed by theory. We demonstrate the potential of the method on the world-largest plasma magnetic confinement device, JET (Joint European Torus, Culham, UK), and the high-magnetic-field tokamak Alcator C-Mod (Cambridge, USA). The obtained results demonstrate efficient acceleration of 3He ions to high energies in dedicated hydrogen–deuterium mixtures.…

Abstract Radiative transfer simulations in the shortwave (SW) and longwave (LW) spectral regions have been carried out to investigate the time evolution of the atmospheric heating/cooling rates and their influence on the temperature profiles under different vertical distributions of the aerosol absorption.
