In 2014, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) published a consensus statement entitled “Beyond the Female Athlete Triad: Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S)”. The syndrome of RED-S refers to: “impaired physiological functioning caused by relative energy deficiency, and includes but is not limited to impairments of metabolic rate, menstrual function, bone health, immunity, protein synthesis, and cardiovascular health.”

Fruit and vegetable consumption and sarcopenia among older adults in low- and middle-income countries

Fruit and vegetable consumption may protect against sarcopenia but there are no studies on this topic from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Thus, we assessed this association among older adults from six LMICs. Community-based cross-sectional data of the Study on Global Aging and Adult Health were analyzed. Sarcopenia was defined as the presence of low skeletal muscle mass based on indirect population formula, and either slow gait or low handgrip strength. The relevance of nutrition for the concept of cognitive frailty

Purpose of review Physical and cognitive frailty are interrelated and synergistic syndromes more frequently seen in old age, which represent intermediate stages between aging successfully and disability. Poor nutrition is a fundamental determinant for both conditions, while various dietary components are proposed to prevent and/or improve them. Environmental enrichment (EE) is an experimental model which is believed to counteract some of the effects induced by stressors, although few studies have exposed rodents simultaneously to EE and stress. Modification of hepatic drug-metabolizing enzymes in rat fed naturally occurring allyl sulphides

The effects of feeding allyl sulphides to rat (2000 ppm of the diet for 15 days) were investigated on various microsomal hepatic drug-metabolizing enzymes by their immunochemical detection and catalytic activity. 2. Allyl sulphides provoked a temporary dietary restriction, which enhanced the microsomal level of P450 and the activities of NADH-cytochrome c reductase and p-hydroxybiphenyl UDP-glucuronyltransferase (UDPGT 2), and lowered the activities of p-nitrophenol hydroxylase (PNPH), N-nitrosodimethylamine demethylase (NDMAD), laurate omega-hydroxylase (LAH) and glutathione S-transferase (GST). Caring for children diagnosed with a chronic psychological disorder such as an eating disorder (ED) can be used as a model of chronic stress. This kind of stress has been reported to have deleterious effects on caregivers' cognition, particularly in verbal declarative memory of women caregivers.
