Innovations and Growth: Evidence from Finnish SMEs
2019
The purpose of this study is to clarify the factors that affect the ability of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to create innovations that promote firm growth. Studies regarding the relationship between research intensity and growth have typically produced mixed results, revealing a modest or non-existent influence of innovations on sales growth. These studies have typically used patents as indicators of innovation. We directly asked firms whether their innovations had affected their growth, and we regressed the results over several variables, covering a wide range of dimensions related to (1) personal factors, (2) firm-related factors (including questions that reflect a firm’s in…
Correlation between school dropout and gross domestic product in the emerging countries of Central and Eastern Europe
2020
By school dropout is meant leaving the educational system, regardless of the reached level, before obtaining a qualification or a complete proffesional training or before the end of the study cycle started (Doron & Parot, 2006). Although there are numerous researches on school dropout, we consider that it is necessary to study the relationship it has with the level of development of a country, in order to identify new causes and possible solutions to this phenomenon. In this study we included seven emerging countries of Central and Eastern Europe: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary. Thus, we analyzed the correlation between the annual gross domesti…

Monedas sociales y complementarias (MSC)
2016
Innovation and Knowledge in Academia
2020
It has recently become very popular among academics to study the process of knowledge transfer within their own organization, with the aim of improving their innovation and performance on a general scope. Knowledge can be divided into two main groups: “explicit” and “tacit” knowledge. The main interest lies in tacit knowledge, since it is one that includes the specific “know-how” of an organization. The cooperation between the different units of an organization promotes the transfer of knowledge between the different organizational areas and positions the departments in an ideal situation to promote innovation. To understand the evolution of the scientific production in terms of innovation …
The Role of Family Ownership in Survival and Bouncing Back
2021
The latest global economic and financial crisis has been a litmus test for companies, especially for SMEs. These companies have had to demonstrate their ability to be resilient, surviving first and then recovering. This chapter studies the role of family ownership in the survival and recovery of SMEs during a stressful event. From a perspective based on the complementarity or substitutability of goals that family firms pursue, the authors propose that family ownership has a positive effect on survival but a negative effect on recovery. Furthermore, they propose that the risk of bankruptcy before a crisis moderates the relationship between family ownership and survival. Hypotheses have been …
The Accumulation of Distinctive Competences in Family Firms
2020
Taking as its basis the resource- and capability-based view of the firm, this study provides an in-depth exploration of the ability of the family tourism firm to accumulate and develop the distinctive competences that are key to its success. Specifically, the analysis centres on how the family tourism firm acquires distinctive competences through the development of managerial capabilities. Using structural equation modelling (SEM), the empirical analysis focuses on a sample of 1,019 Spanish tourism firms. The results of the study suggest that family businesses face certain problems in accumulating distinctive competences. Moreover, the study indicates that such problems are due in part to t…
