Evaluating the impact of public subsidies on a firm's performance : a two-stage quasi-experimental approach

2009

In this paper we evaluate the effectiveness of regional R&D public programs in Catalonia (Spain) with a two-stage procedure. Firstly, we compare the performance of publicly subsidised companies (treated) with that of similar, but unsubsidised companies (non-treated). We use the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) methodology to construct a control group which, with regard to its observable characteristics, is as similar as possible to the treated group, and that allows us to identify firms which maintain the same propensity to receive public subsidies. Secondly, and once a valid comparison group has been established, we compare the respective performance of each firm using regression techniques…

Landscape management and economic evaluation of the ecosystem services of the vineyards

2021

<p>The contribution aims to highlight the relationship between the business economy applied to viticulture and the ecosystem. The concepts of ecosystem services and viticultural biodiversity are seen in order to provide a new perspective for the development of a more sustainable business management. The work contributes to enriching the economic literature by introducing the relationship between ecosystem and business. The new perspective helps to place the company within the wider ecological-social system, favoring a more consistent interpretation of the relationship of exchange (impact and dependence) of resources with nature. The work proposes a methodology for cal…

The past and future of evolutionary economics: some reflections based on new bibliometric evidence

2016

The modern wave of ‘evolutionary economics’ was launched in 1982 with the classic study by Nelson and Winter. This paper reports a broad bibliometric analysis of ‘evolutionary’ research in the disciplines of management, business, economics, and sociology over 25 years from 1986 to 2010. It confirms that Nelson and Winter's book (An evolutionary theory of economic change, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA, 1982) is an enduring nodal reference point for this broad field. The bibliometric evidence suggests that ‘evolutionary economics’ has benefitted from the rise of business schools and other interdisciplinary institutions, which have provided a home for evolutionary terminology, but it…

Designing for Positive User Experience in Work Contexts: Experience Categories and their Applications

2018

Experience categories describe repeatedly occurring qualities of positive experiences that can be used for the analysis and generation of new/further/more positive experiences. This paper describes experience categories for the workplace. Based on 345 reports of positive user experiences in the workplace, we identified 17 experience categories through qualitative content analysis and describe their necessary and optional attributes. We believe that experience categories can support analysis and design activities for the work place in three ways: (a) using the questions derived from experience interviews to analyze existing positive experiences in work contexts, (b) explaining the potential …

An Experiential Approach to the Consumption Value of Arts and Culture: The Case of Museums and Monuments

2006

This article is intended to enhance our understanding of the consumer experience within the cultural domain. The analysis of arts and culture consumption is based on a paradigm founded on the theory of value, which, in turn, underlies the notion of the consumer experience. By investigating the field of museums and monuments, the authors validate this experiential approach to the consumption value of arts and culture. They recommend that, since a theatrical setting elicits emotional and ludic reactions in individuals and entails visitor participation, attendance at museums and monuments could be increased by means of “theatricalizing” – or adding a show-oriented dimension to the consumer exp…

Reliability of measurements during countermovement jump assessments: Analysis of performance across subphases

2020

The aim of this study was to examine the reliability of performance measures in the different phases and sub-phases of the countermovement jump (CMJ). Seventeen male athletes competing at a regional level completed 204 valid trails consisting of the execution of maximal hands-on-waist CMJs performed on a force platform. The vertical ground reaction force (VGRF) data obtained at a sampling frequency of 1000 Hz were used to calculate performance-derived variables and determine key points and jump sub-phases. The relative reliability of 92 variables was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) from a two-way mixed effects model analyzing the time, force, power, velocity, and…

Internal Audit and External Audit Cooperation in EU Countries

2017

There is no common requirement guiding the approaches taken by the European Union (EU) public sector internal audit cooperation with external audit. Relations between these audit systems have developed over time. There are countries with mandatory regulations of internal and external audit cooperation, in some cases cooperation bases on initiatives, to facilitate the auditing process and avoid duplication of work. The aim of this research is to compare the Latvian public administration internal audit and external audit cooperation approach with approaches of the European countries and evaluate each country’s internal audit relation with external audit. The methodology includes a comparative…

Union representation and prevention of occupational risks during the crisis: impact and limits

2019

Changes in students’ understanding of and visual attention on digitally represented graphs across two domains in higher education : a postreplication…

2020

Domain-specific understanding of digitally represented graphs is necessary for successful learning within and across domains in higher education. Two recent studies conducted a cross-sectional analysis of graph understanding in different contexts (physics and finance), task concepts, and question types among students of physics, psychology, and economics. However, neither changes in graph processing nor changes in test scores over the course of one semester have been sufficiently researched so far. This eye-tracking replication study with a pretest–posttest design examines and contrasts changes in physics and economics students’ understanding of linear physics and finance graphs. It analyze…

Conventional Theory’s Relevance: Evidence from Japan

2019

Abstract The formidable surge in the volume of international trade after 1960 stimulated surveys designed to ascertain to what degree the commercial flows among nations reflected the structure of their economies, in other words, how tight was the correlation between international exchanges and the specific attributes of participating nations. In fact, scholars were keen to test the relevance of the conventional Heckscher-Ohlin theory, that is, to what extent did nations’ exports reflect their endowment with factors of production, more specifically, whether their exports used their abundant factors intensively. I try to show that, although most of the tests reached their purpose in that they…
