Acute myocardial infarction occurring in versus out of the hospital: patient characteristics and clinical outcome

2000

OBJECTIVES We describe the baseline characteristics and clinical course of patients who had an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) during their hospital stay. BACKGROUND In comparison with patients who had an AMI outside of the hospital (prehospital AMI), the data on patients who had an AMI in the hospital are poorly described. METHODS Patients with an in-hospital AMI were prospectively registered in the Southwest German Maximal Individual TheRapy in Acute myocardial infarction (MITRA) study and compared with patients with prehospital AMI. RESULTS Of 5,888 patients with AMI, 403 patients (6.8%) had an in-hospital AMI. These patients were older, more often male and sicker as compared with the …

Comparison of Standard Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Versus the Combination of Active Compression-Decompression Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and an …

2003

Background— Active compression-decompression (ACD) CPR combined with an inspiratory impedance threshold device (ITD) improves vital organ blood flow during cardiac arrest. This study compared survival rates with ACD+ITD CPR versus standard manual CPR (S-CPR). Methods and Results— A prospective, controlled trial was performed in Mainz, Germany, in which a 2-tiered emergency response included early defibrillation. Patients with out-of-hospital arrest of presumed cardiac pathogenesis were sequentially randomized to ACD+ITD CPR or S-CPR by the advanced life support team after intubation. Rescuers learned which method of CPR to use at the start of each work shift. The primary end point was 1-ho…

Los profesionales de la salud y la prevención de la violencia doméstica contra la mujer

2008

Domestic violence against women is an important public health problem that cannot be ignored. Health professionals need to take part in the prevention, detection and treatment processes, acting in a coordinate way with other professionals and institutions. This paper analyzes the consequences of domestic violence against women, and underscores the fact that health professionals are part of the social circle surrounding the victims, playing an important role in its detection and prevention. Several response strategies from the health services are examined and, finally, the paper considers screening as a mechanism for early detection of domestic violence, paying special attention to the impor…

Ramadan Observance during Pregnancy in Germany: a Challenge for Prenatal Care.

2018

Abstract Introduction Fasting during Ramadan while pregnant has been shown to have long-term negative effects on the offspringʼs physical and cognitive health. Even though most Muslims do not believe pregnant women are obligated to fast during Ramadan, fasting rates of up to 87% have been reported for pregnant women. No data exists to date about Ramadan adherence and behavior in Germany. Methods The Mainz Study of Ramadan and Pregnancy surveyed pregnant Muslims and new Muslim mothers in Mainz between October 2016 and January 2017 and collected information on Ramadan adherence and behavior. We also collected data on personal characteristics and opinions, to identify determinants of fasting u…

Depressive symptoms in older female carers of adults with intellectual disabilities

2010

Background  This survey study aims to examine the prevalence and factors associated with depressive symptoms among primary older female family carers of adults with intellectual disabilities (ID). Method  In total, 350 female family carers aged 55 and older took part and completed the interview in their homes. The survey package contained standardised scales to assess carer self-reported depressive symptoms, social support, caregiving burden and disease and health, as well as adult and carer sociodemographic information. Multiple linear regressions were used to identify the factors associated with high depressive symptoms in carers. Results  Between 64% and 72% of these carers were classifi…

Disorders associated with burnout and causal attributions of stress among health care professionals in psychiatry

2008

Abstract This study, carried out among health care professionals in psychiatry, evaluates burnout (Maslash Burnout Inventory) in relation to other associated disorders: lower levels of self-esteem in different areas (Self-Esteem Inventory); the frequency of stress felt (Nursing Stress Scale); a lesser feeling of general control (Lumpkin); a more negative perception of the general state of health (Diagnostic Interview Schedule); job dissatisfaction and dissatisfaction with numerous aspects of life (Subjective Quality of Life Profile). Moreover, among these professionals, the fact of describing the causes of one's professional burnout as having a “global” impact on one's behavior (using the C…

Leg extension power asymmetry and mobility limitation in healthy older women

2005

Objective To investigate the association of asymmetry in leg extension power (LEP) with walking and standing balance. Design Cross-sectional analysis. Setting Research laboratory. Participants Healthy female twins (N=419), ages 63 to 75 years. Interventions Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures The LEP difference between the stronger and the weaker leg, measured with the Nottingham power rig, was calculated. Ten-meter maximal walking velocity was assessed in a laboratory corridor on a wide (170cm) and narrow (35cm) track, and the ability to maintain tandem stance for 20 seconds was recorded. Results The mean LEP difference ± standard deviation between the legs was 15%±9% (P<.001). Those wit…
