The doctoral thesis focuses on a novel integrated process for the recovery and valorisation of acid and metal salts present in the waste solutions of the pickling process. The proposed process is based on the integration of two innovative membrane technologies, the Diffusion Dialysis and the Membrane Distillation, coupled with a reactive precipitation section. This hybrid process allows the recovery and the enhancement of waste solutions, as well as optimal operating conditions for the continuous pickling process, thus improving its efficiency. Abstract For many years, globalization was at the main source of economic growth for the world economy. During and after the 2009 crisis many questions about the positive effects of globalization have arisen. In this paper we argue there are two dimensions of economic globalization, micro and macro, and the perspectives of globalization is more related to the microeconomic determinants. Stepping up to strike: a union mobilization case study of Polish migrant workers in the Netherlands

This article examines a union mobilization of Polish temporary agency workers in the Netherlands. The case study contributes to the migrant organizing literature a micro-level account of the dynamics of mobilization from the viewpoint of the migrants and organizers involved. The findings emphasize the importance of key actors in building solidarities within and between different groups of workers in fragmented workplaces, with implications for unions seeking new ways to respond to changing employment practices. This study highlights some of the possibilities and limitations of organizing among contractually fragmented workforces.

Entrepreneurship and Creativity Education in China: Reflections from an Experience-Based Approach to an Introductory Module in Entrepreneurship

Building a competent and creative workforce is one of the greatest challenges of modern and future economies. However, fostering creativity and complex problem-solving capability has traditionally not been high on the agenda of our education systems. Drawing from the experiences of implementing an introductory first-year undergraduate module in entrepreneurship in the unique setting of modern China, the authors reflect upon the challenge of entrepreneurship and creativity education, as well as its implications for the next generation of a creative workforce in China.

Legacy system evolution - A comparative study of modernisation and replacement initiation factors

Decisions regarding information system evolution strategy become topical as the organisation’s information systems age and start to approach the end of their life cycle. An interview study was conducted in order to compare factors influencing modernisation and replacement initiation. System age, obsolete technology and high operation or maintenance costs were identified as triggers for both modernisation and replacement projects. The results show that the most prevalent individual reason for modernisation initiative is business development. Hydrothermal liquefaction of wet waste biomass: a practical assessment to achieve an integral valorization of municipal sludge

Hydrothermal liquefaction of municipal sludge was conducted to perform a practical assessment to achieve an integral valorization of this wet waste biomass. Experiments were done to investigate the effects of sub- and supercritical water and of the fluid dynamic regime on the energy recovery of the process and on the quality of the products. Experimental runs were performed at two different temperatures (350°C and 400°C) changing reaction time in order to work at the same kinetic severity of the process (LogR0=8.9, calculated as in ref. This study focused on resolving the differences in economy between two common sit-skiing postures used by disabled athletes, suspected to be the most and least effective. Ten experienced non-disabled male cross-country skiers went through an incremental testing protocol with an ergometer simulating double poling in two sitting postures "kneeing" and "knee-high." The protocol consisted of 3 × 4 min steady-state stages (13, 22, and 34% of maximal sprint power output). In vivo muscle mechanics during normal locomotion is dependent on movement amplitude and contraction intensity

The effects of movement amplitude and contraction intensity on triceps surae and quadriceps femoris muscle function were studied during repetitive hopping. In vivo forces from Achilles and patellar tendons were recorded with the optic fibre technique from eight volunteers. The performances were filmed (200 Hz) to determine changes in muscle-tendon unit length and velocity. When hopping with a small amplitude (23° knee flexion during the ground contact phase), the Achilles tendon was primarily loaded whereas patellar tendon forces were greater in large-amplitude hopping (56° knee flexion).
