Suppression of leukotriene B4 and tumour necrosis factor alpha release in acute inflammatory responses by novel prenylated hydroquinone derivatives.

A series of prenyl hydroquinone derivatives synthesized as structural analogs of marine products were tested for their effects on inflammatory responses in vitro and in vivo. 2-Prenyl-1,4-hydroquinone (H1), 2-diprenyl-1,4-hydroquinone (H2), 2-triprenyl-1,4-hydroquinone (H3) and 2-tetraprenyl-1,4-hydroquinone (H4) scavenged reactive oxygen species and inhibited 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) activity in human neutrophils. The inhibition of 5-LO activity was demonstrated in vivo in the mouse air pouch injected with zymosan and arachidonic acid-induced ear inflammation. Susceptibility of mouse skeletal muscles to exercise injuries.

The susceptibility to exercise-induced myopathy was studied by histological and biochemical methods in various skeletal muscles of mice 3-4 days after a single bout of prolonged running. The degree of exercise injuries varied greatly in different muscles. Soleus and the red deep parts of quadriceps femoris were the most severely affected muscles. Extensive or scattered necrosis of muscle fibers was associated with focal inflammation and a five- to nine-fold increase in the activity of beta-glucuronidase in these muscles. Modulatory effect of bolinaquinone, a marine sesquiterpenoid, on acute and chronic inflammatory processes

The marine metabolite bolinaquinone is a novel inhibitor of secretory phospholipase A(2) (sPLA(2)), with a potency on the human synovial enzyme (group II) higher than that of manoalide. This activity on the sPLA(2) was confirmed in vivo in the 8-h zymosan rat air pouch on the secretory enzyme accumulation in the pouch exudate. Additionally, bolinaquinone decreased potently the synthesis and release of leukotriene B(4) (LTB(4)) in calcimycin (A23187)-stimulated human neutrophils as a consequence of the inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase activity, as well as PGE(2) and NO production on zymosan-stimulated mouse peritoneal macrophages. Children monosensitized to pine nuts have similar patterns of sensitization

Background Several cases of pine nut allergies and anaphylaxis have been reported in the literature, but only few pine nut allergens have been characterized. The aim of this research is to identify through immunoelectrophoretic techniques the major pine nut allergens in a group of children monosensitized to pine nuts. Abstract Bone fracture with subsequent immobilization of the injured limb can cause complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) in humans. Mechanisms of CRPS are still not completely understood but bone fracture with casting in mice leads to a similar post-traumatic inflammation as seen in humans and might therefore be an analog to human CRPS. OBJECTIVES: Animal studies have shown that the elevation of plasma glutamate levels increase cerebral edema formation whenever the blood-brain barrier is disturbed. Therefore, changes in plasma glutamate levels as influenced by the administration of a glutamate-containing amino acid solution were investigated in neurosurgical patients.
