The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence was pleased to present the 2010 Fall Symposium Series, held Thursday through Saturday, November 11-13, at the Westin Arlington Gateway in Arlington, Virginia. The titles of the eight symposia are as follows: (1) Cognitive and Metacognitive Educational Systems; (2) Commonsense Knowledge; (3) Complex Adaptive Systems: Resilience, Robustness, and Evolvability; (4) Computational Models of Narrative; (5) Dialog with Robots; (6) Manifold Learning and Its Applications; (7) Proactive Assistant Agents ; and (8) Quantum Informatics for Cognitive, Social, and Semantic Processes. The highlights of each symposium are presented in this report.
When Augmented Reality Met Art: Lessons Learned from Researcher–Artist Interdisciplinary Work
2018
Over the last few years, Augmented Reality (AR) technology has quickly evolved and today there is commercial software and hardware that allow the creation of AR experiences. However, it might still be cumbersome to create rich AR experiences without a deep knowledge of the technology. Artists have collaborated with IT experts during the last few years in order to enhance artistic pieces embedding AR technology, leading to the emergence of interesting collaborations between artists and engineers, computer scientists, architects, etc. The resulting works can be referred as AR Art. However, the interdisciplinary work behind these collaborations is usually not addressed. The aim of this paper i…
Perspectives on executive information systems
1995
Executives who consider the acquisition of Executive Information Systems (EIS) may encounter several major problems already in their selection and introduction stages. Key issues are the following: Can the EIS's really match our managerial needs and support decision making in our organizational contingencies? How widely in the leadership levels can they be introduced? Are they easy-to-learn, easy-to-use and easily customizable? Do they utilize the newest information technology, e.g. graphics and modern interface technology? Can they work in our computer network? In order to facilitate elegant solutions of the selection problems, we construct an evaluation framework which guides the selectio…
Improving OHS activities at company level with decision support software
2012
Abstract The paper presents the results of a project implemented at S.C. COMPA S.A., an automotive manufacturing company from Sibiu, Romania. The goal of the project was to develop a practical and sustainable solution for improving the work conditions in the company, by a proactive and systematic evaluation of compliance with national and European OHS legislation. To reach this objective an evaluation methodology was developed and a software system was implemented to support the decisions made by the company and OHS managers to improve work conditions and to grow safety level for the employees. The workplaces problems regarding risks assessment and control are revealed and managers can take…
Communication in the Process of Elaborating Strategies on Company Development
2014
The development of any industrial company is based on the existence of a strategy of sustainable development, based on an appropriate communication. A theory of communication has been developed, which has led to the occurrence of a specific form of communication, namely the managerial communication. As such, this chapter deals with the study of the communication process and the importance of this process in the industrial companies' development processes. There are several models regarding the analyses of strategies in the industrial companies' portfolios. In this context, several Romanian industry development strategies have been identified in the transition period, such as: strategy of re…
Business Models in Spanish Industry: a Taxonomy-based Efficacy Analysis
2010
The present study provides a conceptualization of the business model construct from which a multi-dimensional evaluation tool is developed that provides the basis for drawing up a taxonomy and analysing its comparative efficacy. The empirical data was obtained from a sampling of 159 Spanish business organisations. The cluster analysis revealed the existence of four business models that were designated as “multidivisional”, “integrated”, “hybrid” and “network”. The results also indicate that the adoption of a certain business model is not enough to attain superior performance, highlighting the need to consider other contingent factors.
TQM and Innovation: Controversial Issues Surrounding the Impact of Formalization over Radical Innovation
2015
The purpose of this chapter is to better understand the influence of total quality management (TQM) practices on innovation, examining the conflicting issues that surround the impact of process management implementation and the effects of subsequent formalization on radical innovation. We consider several arguments that appear in the literature, as well as empirical research findings on this topic, discussing how TQM can stimulate a context that favors innovation, putting all the experience and competences of the firm at the service of innovation goals, or conversely, considering the potential barriers that process management and formalization can build against radical innovation. An extens…

Data and Information Quality Research in Engineering Construction Projects: A Review of Literature
2013
This article presents a review of the research on Data and Information Quality (DQ/IQ) assessment in engineering construction. Through a review of 445 articles on the topic, only nine were found in the context of engineering construction. The analysis of these nine articles revealed six challenges in performing DQ/IQ assessment in this context: the iterative nature of concurrent engineering, the uniqueness of engineering data, lack of integration between processes, lack of integration between systems, lack of timely information, and lack of relevant DQ/IQ assessment frameworks and tools. The specific contributions of this paper are the identification of DQ/IQ challenges in engineering const…
