Conceptual Fundamentals for a Theoretical and Empirical Framework of Positive Learning
2017
We present a short overview of the idea, genesis and developing process of PLATO (Positive Learning in the Age of InformaTiOn) as a new, complex, international, interdisciplinary program aimed at investigating the phenomena of positive and negative learning in the digital age. While the basic idea of PLATO originated in empirical educational research, many other very different disciplines have consequently been incorporated into this program, in order to expand learning research and to offer a comprehensive and multi-perspective explanation of learning in 21st century higher education. We draw upon and critically discuss previous research, highlighting implications for developing a theoreti…
GeoMaTech: Integrating Technology and New Pedagogical Approaches Into Primary and Secondary School Teaching to Enhance Mathematics Education in Hunga…
2015
During the past decades, technology has been becoming an integral part of everyday life and slowly shaping mathematics and science teaching and learning (e.g. Heid & Blume, 2008). Although there have been enormous investments on educational technologies in many countries technology has yet to make a sizable impact on education (e.g. Drijvers et al., 2010). On the one hand students are becoming increasingly proficient users of technology while on the other hand opportunities offered by technologies have still little been utilized. Nevertheless, as technologies are becoming more integrated into education, they are providing new opportunities for pedagogical approaches and classroom organizati…
The professional agency of teacher educators amid academic discourses
2012
Agency has been seen as fundamental in the renegotiation of professional identities. However, it is unclear how teacher educators exercise their professional agency in their work, and how multiple discourses frame and restrict the practice of their professional agency. This study examines how teacher educators practise agency in negotiating their professional identities amid the multiple discourses emerging from the academic context of their work. The aim was to investigate educators’ locally expressed professional agency in the context of the more global discourses that may construct teacher educator identities. The analysis made use of applied thematic discursive analysis to address patte…

2016

Ethnographic Monitoring: Hymes's Unfinished Business in Educational Research
2011
This essay describes the process of Hymesian monitoring, a collaborative effort to understand voice in education, so crucial in Hymes's later work. A report of ethnographic monitoring in 1970s Philadelphia and a recent collaborative project in the Caribbean demonstrate how one can work from the voice of the pupil, through that of the analyst toward that of the teacher and back, checking what each party brought into the analysis and treating each of these voices as legitimate. [Hymes, ethnographic monitoring, Philadelphia, Barbados, ethnopoetics]

A Lonely Profession?
2019
In educational research, the teaching profession is often treated as interaction located only in the classroom, with less attention to other aspects of school reality. Some studies, and the Finnish national curriculum (2014), suggest that the school system needs more practices that aim at negotiation, cooperation, and interaction with the surrounding society. In Finland, where both the teaching profession and the educational system are highly regarded, Finnish primary education has been criticized for its immobility and lack of flexibility. The qualitative research presented in this article draws on interview data collected from 13 Finnish (elementary) classroom teachers. The results of thi…

Lost in Enthusiasm? An Elementary Qualitative Analysis of 44 Years of Research in Order to Show Why Even Today Educational Historiography is Not an U…
2021
The statement from this article that historical reflection remains essential in educational research will not be demonstrated by one or another theoretical reasoning, but by four illustrations taken from my 44-year-old research career in the history of education. Each one of these illustrations represents an important research line of my career. The first deals with the history of primary education (mainly in Belgium, but also elsewhere). It concentrates on the relationship between continuity and change within the educational practices, in general, and on the irony and immunisation of educational innovations, in particular. The second deals with the history of educational sciences from the …
