Towards Technology-Supported Surgical Training

2008

Technology offers alternatives for training surgeons with patients and also possibilities to take part in surgical learning from afar, outside the operating room (OR). Simulated and other technical training tools provide opportunities to practice surgical skills in undisturbed learning environments. In order to implement effective educational methods and create new environments for learning, we need to find out what skills a surgeon must learn and what are the elements affecting surgical performance. This paper describes a study designed to investigate surgical processes and presents an exploratory way of gathering data by combining video material with interviews. The suitability of triangu…

Students' and teachers' experiences of a problem-based learning method in health promotion in a Finnish polytechnic

2003

Objective This study explored students' and their teachers' experiences of a problem-based learning method (PBL) and its manifestation in health promotion education. Design The study was based on a more extensive follow-up research project that investigated the teaching and learning of health promotion in two polytechnics of health care from 1997 to 2000. Settings A Finnish polytechnic of health care and nursing within a larger multidisciplinary educational institution. Method The data consisted of interviews with nine student nurses and ten teachers, conducted in 1999 and 2000. The data were analysed using inductive content analysis. Results During the first year when the polytechnic star…

Digital Game-Based Learning: A Supplement for Medication Calculation Drills in Nurse Education

2014

Student nurses, globally, appear to struggle with medication calculations. In order to improve these skills among student nurses, the authors developed The Medication Game – an online computer game that aims to provide simple mathematical and medical calculation drills, and help students practise standard medical units and expressions. The aim of this study was to examine whether baccalaureate student nurses who played The Medication Game as a supplement to lectures and task-solving during a medication calculation course improved their examination results compared to a control group who used lectures and task-solving only. The authors used a randomised controlled design to study 201 studen…

A Collaborative Classroom-Based Teacher Professional Learning Model

2017

This article reviews the Latvian experience of exploring a teacher continuous professional learning model, with an emphasis on teacher collaboration for professional learning. The developed model focuses on lessons taught in real-life classrooms and their subsequent analysis. The model consists of a set of regularly scheduled workshops in a period of a school year. It is based on the idea of a multiple activity cycle of “observe–reflect–write–discuss” conducted several times during every workshop. Every participant has an opportunity to experience two roles: that of a leader, teach a demonstration lesson to his/her colleagues, and that of a learner, observe, analyse and reflect on a colleag…

Context metadata to adapt Ambient Learning Environments

2008

Ambient learning and knowledge environments (ALKE) are a promising concept for new methods of learning and in particular adapted, personalized learning environments. However, currently very few approaches specify concepts for adaptation. We present a metadata approach to identify and (automatically) derive the context of learning environments as a basis for adaptation. The concept has been partially validated in a scenario of ldquoSpontaneous Group Learningrdquo in Higher Education.

Static and animated presentations in learning dynamic mechanical systems

2009

Abstract In two experiments, we investigated how learners comprehend the functioning of a three-pulley system from a presentation on a computer screen. In the first experiment (N = 62) we tested the effect of static vs. animated presentations on comprehension. In the second experiment (N = 45), we tested the effect of user-control of an animated presentation on comprehension. In both experiments the participants were university students. Comprehension was measured with a test including three comprehension indicators. The first experiment indicated that an animation as well as integrated sequential static frames enhanced comprehension. The second experiment showed that a controllable animati…

The effect of time and place dependence when utilizing video lectures

2009

In many learning institutes, diversification of teaching with the help of various technologies has become an essential part of educational arrangements. With the increase in the use of networks for teaching purposes, the use of streaming videos is now one of the possibilities to be reckoned with in trying to increase flexibility in studies. Specially recorded on-demand videos provide the students with better chances to decide when, where and how to study. Information on how students use on-demand videos can be obtained, apart from student questionnaires, from the log files of a media server. These files offer an information source that, on the one hand, is diverse but, on the other, cumbers…

Estrategias basadas en análisis de redes sociales para optimizar el clima de aprendizaje en la universidad

2021

The aim of this study was to detect leaders among a group of university students based on their centrality scores and, from these scores, to distribute roles to help enhance learning climate. We understood that learning climate improved when the construction of networked knowledge was stimulated from the perspective of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning. We conducted the educational experiment in a virtual environment. An online discussion forum was set up in a loo- sely structured format, and the students’ centrality scores were calculated from the social network they generated in the forum. Our findings show that student connectivity increased significantly and that several leaders…
