High-Efficiency Multi-Junction Photovoltaic Cells in School Physics Laboratory
2020
Energy consumption in the world is increasing more and more due to the huge energy request coming from emerging countries such as China, India, etc. To face the challenge of sustainability, a solution may be the use of solar energy, since it is the most abundant renewable energy source on Earth. The electromagnetic energy coming from the Sun can be converted into usable energy (electricity) by solar cells, whose conversion efficiency is continuously increasing due to scientific and technological progress. The proposed activity is thought to be carried out with secondary as well as high school students to allow teachers to discuss sustainability issues, and to provide students with an introd…
Internet banking loyalty: evaluating the role of trust, satisfaction, perceived risk and frequency of use
2011
This paper analyses the role of satisfaction, trust, frequency of use and perceived risk as antecedents of consumer loyalty to banking websites. While the literature usually focuses on the direct effects of these variables, special attention is paid here to evaluate their moderating effects on the relationship between satisfaction and loyalty. The results from a sample of 254 Spanish users of Internet banking services show that while satisfaction correlates positively with loyalty, the effect is significantly less intense with high levels of perceived risk. The results are similar for trust, which correlates more positively with high levels of perceived risk, but also when Internet banking …
Shakedown of Structures Accounting for Damage Effects
2002
Shakedown theory for elastic-plastic-damage materials is exposed. Two kinds of shakedown are considered: i) Enlarged shakedown (or simply shakedown), in which both plastic deformations and damage eventually cease, after which the structural response is purely elastic; ii) Weak-form shakedown, in which plastic deformations eventually cease together with their consequences (including ductile damage), not necessarily damage from other sources (which are however escluded by assumption). An (enlarged) shakedown static-type theorem is given for a class of D-stable structures. Sufficient theorems of weak-form shakedown are provided, i.e. a static-type one (quite similar to that of Hachemi and Weic…

Autoimmune thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (iTTP) is a life-threatening, relapsing disease in which an acquired deficiency of the enzyme ADAMTS13 leads to generalised microvascular thrombosis. Survivors have a high prevalence of depression and impaired cognitive function. The aim of this study was to determine whether life circumstances and personality have an influence on the development and severity of depression and anxiety in iTTP patients and how they impact the quality of life. With validated questionnaires, we examined the prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms in 104 iTTP patients, as well as parameters of subjective cognitive deficits, quality of life, attitude to life a…
Response to 'TH1 and TH2 cytokine control of thyrocyte survival in thyroid autoimmunity'
2001
Mirakian et al. question our recent results, which suggest that thyrocyte survival during thyroid autoimmunity depends on differential effects of TH1 and TH2 cytokines1. Thyrocyte destruction in autoimmune thyroiditis is a slow process that lasts several years. We hypothesized that in thyroid autoimmunity the balance between life and death in thyrocytes depends on the predominance over the time of TH2 and TH1 cytokines, whose action is not restricted to immune cells but involves direct modulation of key molecules responsible for survival or death of target cells1.
Impact of rocket exhaust plumes on atmospheric composition and climate – an overview
2013
Rockets are the only direct anthropogenic emission sources into the upper atmosphere. Gaseous rocket emissions include CO, N2, H2, H2O, and CO2, while solid rocket motors (SRM) additionally inject significant amounts of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) particles and gaseous chlorine species into the atmosphere. These emissions strongly perturb local at- mospheric trace gas and aerosol distributions. Here, the previous aircraft measurements in various rocket exhaust plumes including several large space shuttle launch vehicles are compiled. The observed changes of the lower stratospheric composition in the near field are summarized.
Simulation of parasitic effects on Silicon Carbide devices for automotive electric traction
2020
Wide Band Gap (WBG) semiconductors are increasingly addressed towards Electric Vehicle (EV) applications, due to their significant advantages in terms of high-voltage and low-losses performances, suitable for high power applications. Nevertheless, the packaging in WBG devices represents a challenge for designers due to the notable impact that inductive and capacitive parasitic components can bring in high switching frequency regime in terms of noise and power losses. In this paper, a comparison between conventional Silicon (Si) and emerging Silicon-Carbide (SiC) power switching devices is presented. The effects of inductive parasitic effects and switching frequency are investigated in simul…
Agreements regarding the property relations of transnational couples and their effects under the application of the twin regulations
2021
It is a true and verifiable fact that the family institution has evolved over recent decades in Europe and throughout the world, but not uniformly or at the same time. This is because it is influenced by social and cultural connotations specific to each State. All of which are respected under EU Regulations 2016/1103 and 2016/1104. This work analyses the Twins Regulations, that gives the couples the possibility of choosing the jurisdiction (art. 7) and applicable legal system underpinning the property consequences of the marriage and registered partnerships (art. 22.1). However, we try to show you these rules absolute freedom of choice is not granted to the parties, because this freedom is …
Jyväskylän yliopiston ylioppilaskunnan hiili- ja luontojalanjälki
2023
Lifestyle and impact on cardiovascular risk factor control in coronary patients across 27 countries: Results from the European Society of Cardiology …
2019
Aims The aim of this study was to determine whether the Joint European Societies guidelines on secondary cardiovascular prevention are followed in everyday practice. Design A cross-sectional ESC-EORP survey (EUROASPIRE V) at 131 centres in 81 regions in 27 countries. Methods Patients (<80 years old) with verified coronary artery events or interventions were interviewed and examined ≥6 months later. Results A total of 8261 patients (females 26%) were interviewed. Nineteen per cent smoked and 55% of them were persistent smokers, 38% were obese (body mass index ≥30 kg/m2), 59% were centrally obese (waist circumference: men ≥102 cm; women ≥88 cm) while 66% were physically active <30 min 5…
