A Framework of Professional Transferable Competences for System Innovation: Enabling Leadership and Agency for Sustainable Development
2021
System Innovation (SI) is a critical approach in driving individual and collective actions towards sustainable development (SD). This article presents the validation process of the Climate-KIC Professional Competence Framework (CF) for SI. This framework is based on principles of system thinking and the need for human capital to deal with challenges related to long-term sustainability. It comprises twenty competences grouped into five stages that describe contexts where professionals implement transformations: Exploring, Framing, Designing, Implementing and Strengthening. The stages are not linear or strictly sequential because overlapping and loops are frequent in transformational and disr…
Life-cycle effects in small business finance
2017
This paper studies the life-cycle profiles of small firms’ cost and use of credit using a panel of Finnish firms. The choice of method matters for the conclusions drawn about the relationship between firm age and financing costs; the cross-sectional age profiles of financing costs are hump-shaped and consistent with hold-up theories, whereas methods that control for cohort fixed effects demonstrate that the financing costs decrease monotonically as the firms mature. The life-cycle profiles of the use of credit also indicate that firms are more dependent on financial intermediaries in the early periods of their lives. Furthermore, the cohorts born during recessions pay higher financing costs…
An Exploratory Analysis of Factors Associated with Health-Related Physical Fitness in Adolescents. The ASSO Project
2018
Monitoring physical fitness (fitness) and identifying, since the beginning, possible determinants in youth could be useful to preserve health and avoid morbidities in adulthood. The main objective of this study is to provide details on the fitness levels of a sample of adolescents living in the Southern area of Italy and describe its associations with biological/genetic, socio-cultural/environmental, and lifestyle (physical activity/sedentariness, alcohol/smoking, meal patterns/habits) factors. The study was conducted within the Adolescence Surveillance System for Obesity Prevention (ASSO) project, funded by the Italian Ministry of Health and examining adolescents&rsquo
Palladium-Catalyzed Direct Arylation of Heteroaromatics with Activated Aryl Chlorides Using a Sterically Relieved Ferrocenyl-Diphosphane
2012
International audience; The palladium-catalyzed direct arylations at C3 or C4 positions of heteroaromatics are known to be more challenging than at C2 or C5 positions. Aryl chlorides are also challenging substrates for direct arylation of heteroaromatics. We observed that in the presence of a palladium-catalyst combining only 0.5 mol % of Pd(OAc)2 with the sterically relieved new ferrocenyl diphosphane Sylphos, the direct arylation at C3 or C4 of oxazoles, a benzofuran, an indole, and a pyrazole was found to proceed in moderate to high yields using a variety of electron deficient aryl chlorides. Turnover numbers up to 176 have been obtained with this catalyst. Assessment of the electron-don…
Temperature effects explain continental scale distribution of cyanobacterial toxins
2018
Insight into how environmental change determines the production and distribution of cyanobacterial toxins is necessary for risk assessment. Management guidelines currently focus on hepatotoxins (microcystins). Increasing attention is given to other classes, such as neurotoxins (e.g., anatoxin-a) and cytotoxins (e.g., cylindrospermopsin) due to their potency. Most studies examine the relationship between individual toxin variants and environmental factors, such as nutrients, temperature and light. In summer 2015, we collected samples across Europe to investigate the effect of nutrient and temperature gradients on the variability of toxin production at a continental scale. Direct and indirect…

Whispering Gallery Modes: Advanced Photonic Applications
2019

The Instability of Ni{N(SiMe3)2}2: A Fifty Year Old Transition Metal Silylamide Mystery
2015
The characterization of the unstable NiII bis(silylamide) Ni{N(SiMe3)2}2 (1), its THF complex Ni{N(SiMe3)2}2(THF) (2), and the stable bis(pyridine) derivative trans-Ni{N(SiMe3)2}2(py)2 (3), is described. Both 1 and 2 decompose at ca. 25 °C to a tetrameric NiI species, [Ni{N(SiMe3)2}]4 (4), also obtainable from LiN(SiMe3)2 and NiCl2(DME). Experimental and computational data indicate that the instability of 1 is likely due to ease of reduction of NiII to NiI and the stabilization of 4 through dispersion forces. peerReviewed
Molecular dynamics simulations of heavy ion induced defects in SiC Schottky diodes
2018
Heavy ion irradiation increases the leakage current in reverse-biased SiC Schottky diodes. This letter demonstrates, via molecular dynamics simulations, that a combination of bias and ion-deposited energy is required to produce the degradation. Peer reviewed
