Elastic force in Kant?s early works
2018
This paper argues that the notion of elastic force is an important and overlooked thread running through a number of Kant’s writings from 1754 to 1764. After presenting the historical context, I argue that the key aspects of Kant’s early understanding of physical elasticity can be found in On Fire (1755) and show how Kant attempts to explain a wide range of phenomena through elasticity. On my account, one aim of his account of physical monads is provide metaphysical grounds for elastic phenomena. Finally, I examine Kant’s hints that minds can be understood through an analogy with elastic physical phenomena. ispartof: Revista de Estudios Kantianos vol:3 issue:2 pages:190-207 status: published
Search for WIMP Inelastic Scattering off Xenon Nuclei with XENON100
2017
We present the first constraints on the spin-dependent, inelastic scattering cross section of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) on nucleons from XENON100 data with an exposure of 7.64 ×103 kg .days . XENON100 is a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber with 62 kg of active mass, operated at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy and designed to search for nuclear recoils from WIMP-nucleus interactions. Here we explore inelastic scattering, where a transition to a low-lying excited nuclear state of Xe 129 is induced. The experimental signature is a nuclear recoil observed together with the prompt deexcitation photon. We see no evidence for such inelastic WIMP-Xe…
Feasibility and physics potential of detecting $^8$B solar neutrinos at JUNO
2021
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) features a 20 kt multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator sphere as its main detector. Some of JUNO's features make it an excellent location for 8B solar neutrino measurements, such as its low-energy threshold, high energy resolution compared with water Cherenkov detectors, and much larger target mass compared with previous liquid scintillator detectors. In this paper, we present a comprehensive assessment of JUNO's potential for detecting 8B solar neutrinos via the neutrino-electron elastic scattering process. A reduced 2 MeV threshold for the recoil electron energy is found to be achievable, assuming that the intrinsic radioactive …
Measurement of the inclusive jet cross-section in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76\ \mbox{TeV}$ and comparison to the inclusive jet cross-section at $…
2013
The inclusive jet cross-section has been measured in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=2.76 TeV in a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.20pb-1 collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2011. Jets are identified using the anti-kt algorithm with two radius parameters of 0.4 and 0.6. The inclusive jet double-differential cross-section is presented as a function of the jet transverse momentum pT and jet rapidity y, covering a range of 20 <= pT < 430 GeV and |y| < 4.4. The ratio of the cross-section to the inclusive jet cross-section measurement at sqrt(s)=7 TeV, published by the ATLAS Collaboration, is calculated as a function of both trans…

Studies of Inelastic Scattering of Fast Heavy Ions
2003
In the present experiment 250A MeV O-17 ions were melastically scattered front xenon and argon in the cluster-jet target of the CELSIUS storage ring. The magnetic lattice of the ring is such that the quadrant following the target can be used as a magnetic spectrometer with an acceptance cone of +/-0.6degrees, centred at 0degrees. A focal plane telescope, placed in the injection straight section. determined the excitation energy of the residual target nuclei. Data were taken for excitation energies between 15 and 35 MeV. The neutron decay was studied by the EDEN detector array positioned around the target, covering an angular range of 7-110degrees. In order to investigate a previously observ…
NH3 dynamics in Zn(NH3)4I2 and Zn(NH3)4Br2 investigated by incoherent quasielastic neutron scattering
1997
We report on studies of NH3 dynamics in Zn(NH3)4I2 and Zn(NH3)4Br2 by means of incoherent quasielastic neutron scattering in the temperature range from 150 to 300 K. Quasielastic experiments were carried out on the Fermi chopper time-of-flight spectrometer at NIST. The Lorentzian full-widths at half-maximum, ƒw, of the quasielastic line follow an Arrhenius law and increase from 0.39 [0.25] meV at 150 K to 1.33 [0.80] meV at 300 K. We find an activation energy Ea for the NH3 reorientations of 32(1) and 30(3) meV for Zn(NH3)4I2 and Zn(NH3)4Br2, respectively.
On the effect of damping on dispersion curves in plates
2013
AbstractThis paper presents a study on quantitative prediction and understanding of time-harmonic wave characteristics in damped plates. Material dissipation is modelled by using complex-valued velocities of free dilatation and shear waves in an unbounded volume. As a numerical example, solution of the classical Rayleigh–Lamb problem for a viscoelastic plate is presented to illustrate and discuss the role of dissipation in the cut-off phenomenon and in the phenomenon of veering for dispersion curves. These phenomena are explained in more detail considering a simple model, which allows accurate asymptotic analysis of the perturbation of dispersion curves in the regions of cut-off and veering.
