Health Indicator for Low-Speed Axial Bearings Using Variational Autoencoders

2020

This paper proposes a method for calculating a health indicator (HI) for low-speed axial rolling element bearing (REB) health assessment by utilizing the latent representation obtained by variational inference using Variational Autoencoders (VAEs), trained on each speed reference in the dataset. Further, versatility is added by conditioning on the speed, extending the VAE to a conditional VAE (CVAE), thereby incorporating all speeds in a single model. Within the framework, the coefficients of autoregressive (AR) models are used as features. The dimensionality reduction inherent in the proposed method lowers the need of expert knowledge to design good condition indicators. Moreover, the sugg…

Using an Adaptive High-Gain Extended Kalman Filter With a Car Efficiency Model

2010

The authors apply the Adaptive High-Gain Extended Kalman Filter (AEKF) to the problem of estimating engine efficiency with data gathered from normal driving. The AEKF is an extension of the traditional Kalman Filter that allows the filter to be reactive to perturbations without sacrificing noise filtering. An observability normal form of the engine efficiency model is developed for the AEKF. The continuous-discrete AEKF is presented along with strategies for dealing with asynchronous data. Empiric test results are presented and contrasted with EKF-derived results.Copyright © 2010 by ASME

Virtual sensing of load forces in hydraulic actuators using second- and higher-order sliding modes

2019

Abstract External load forces are challenging for sensing or estimating in the hydraulic actuators. Once it is due to inconvenient instrumentation of the force sensors, especially on an open-end mechanical interface. The other way, the complex nonlinear system behavior aggravates reconstructing the system states in a robust and real-time suitable manner. This paper proposes a sensorless estimation of external load forces in standard hydraulic actuators by using a well-established equivalent output injection of the second-order sliding mode and also higher-order sliding mode differentiator. Only the basic inertial and frictional parameters are assumed to be known from an initial identificati…

Design of parallel compensator and stabilizing controller to mitigate non-minimum phase behaviour of the Czochralski Process

2020

Abstract This paper addresses the design of a parallel compensator and a stabilizing controller for the simplified crystal growth dynamics of the Czochralski (CZ) process, i.e., the process for the production of monocrystalline silicon ingots of uniform diameter. The diameter control of the produced ingots is achieved by a CCD camera measurement used to sense the radius of the boundary between the base of the growing crystal and the surrounding glowing meniscus — a raised melt surface connecting the crystal ingot with the flatter melt surface. Due to the intrinsic nature of the process, the bright ring radius measurement signal exhibits a non-minimum phase behaviour. A combination of the pa…

The Effect of Baffles on Heat Transfer

2019

For a long time technicians and engineers have used geometric changes of objects for the purpose of enhancement of heat transfer. The discovery and use of nanofluids and their unique properties lead to a new revolution on the heat transfer. This paper presents the simulation of Ansis software applied to the flow tube with a constant flux, also studies the effect of baffles and the use of nano particles on heat transfer.

Bio-inspired evolutionary dynamics on complex networks under uncertain cross-inhibitory signals

2019

Given a large population of agents, each agent has three possiblechoices between option 1 or 2 or no option. The two options are equally favorable and the population has to reach consensus on one of the two options quickly and in a distributed way. The more popular an option is, the more likely it is to be chosen by uncommitted agents. Agents committed to one option can be attracted by those committed to the other option through a cross-inhibitory signal. This model originates in the context of honeybee swarms, and we generalize it to duopolistic competition and opinion dynamics. The contributions of this work include (i) the formulation of a model to explain the behavioral traits of the ho…

Adaptive Fuzzy Super-Twisting Sliding Mode Control for Microgyroscope

2019

This paper proposes a novel adaptive fuzzy super-twisting sliding mode control scheme for microgyroscopes with unknown model uncertainties and external disturbances. Firstly, an adaptive algorithm is used to estimate the unknown parameters and angular velocity of microgyroscopes. Secondly, in order to improve the performance of the system and the superiority of the super-twisting algorithm, this paper utilizes the universal approximation characteristic of the fuzzy system to approach the gain of the super-twisting sliding mode controller and identify the gain of the controller online, realizing the adaptive adjustment of the controller parameters. Simulation results verify the superiority a…

Improved Active Disturbance Rejection Control for Trajectory Tracking Control of Lower Limb Robotic Rehabilitation Exoskeleton.

2020

Neurological disorders such as cerebral paralysis, spinal cord injuries[acronym](SCI), and strokes, result in the impairment of motor control and induce functional difficulties to human beings like walking, standing, etc. Physical injuries due to accidents and muscular weaknesses caused by aging [english]affectsaffect people and can cause them to lose their ability to perform daily routine functions. In order to help people recover or improve their dysfunctional activities and quality of life after accidents or strokes, assistive devices like exoskeletons and orthoses are developed. Control strategies for control of exoskeletons are developed with the desired intention of improving the qual…

Estimation of Sway-angle Based on Hybrid State Observer Using Continuous and Discrete Sensing

2019

A hybrid state observer design is presented herein to estimate sway-angle and angular velocity in trolley systems with pendulum. In general, anti-sway control for trolley systems with pendulum such as overhead cranes are designed based on sway-angle signals detected by angular sensors. Opposed to that, a state observer without those sensors is proposed to estimate the sway-angle of the pendulum. A standard linear continuous feedback observer causes estimation error owing to the system nonlinearity and modeling error. This paper proposes a hybrid state observer incorporating discrete sensor signals. In the hybrid state observer, the estimation performance is improved by correcting the state …
