Digital participation in service environments among senior electricity consumers in Finland
2018
Research to date suggests that older adults engage with digital technologies less frequently than young adults. Studies typically focus on chronological age, ignoring the effects of life course factors on the adoption and use of digital technologies. By utilising multiple triangulation, the article investigates the role of age and life course stage in the usage of an electricity company's online services among senior consumers. The data are derived from an internet-based survey study (N = 1366) and six focus group discussions involving Finnish electricity consumers (N = 29). The results suggest that online consumers aged 50 and over utilise electricity company online services more frequentl…
Feasibility analysis and study of a grid-connected hybrid electric system: Application in the building sector
2016
This paper represents the feasibility study and analysis of a grid-connected hybrid (PV-Wind) system with battery, realized within the project DE.DU.ENER.T and installed in the research centre CRTEn located in the northern Tunisia in the city of Borj-Cedria. The main objective of this work is to exploit renewable sources of electrical energy production to electrify the desired building. So, to minimize electricity consumption costs, reduce the adverse effects of pollutants products from the diesel power systems and sometimes happen to sell the surplus of energy produced. The HOMER (Hybrid Optimization Model of Electric Renewable) software is used to estimate system size and its performance …
Measurement technique for real-time and low-cost biosensing using photonic bandgap structures
2011
We present a sensing technique based on using photonic bandgap structures where only the output power is monitored, without the need of tunable sources or spectrum analyzers, thus providing a real-time and low-cost system.
Molecular mechanism of T-cell protein tyrosine phosphatase (TCPTP) activation by mitoxantrone.
2013
T-cell protein tyrosine phosphatase (TCPTP) is a ubiquitously expressed non-receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase. It is involved in the negative regulation of many cellular signaling pathways. Thus, activation of TCPTP could have important therapeutic applications in diseases such as cancer and inflammation. We have previously shown that the α-cytoplasmic tail of integrin α1β1 directly binds and activates TCPTP. In addition, we have identified in a large-scale high-throughput screen six small molecules that activate TCPTP. These small molecule activators include mitoxantrone and spermidine. In this study, we have investigated the molecular mechanism behind agonist-induced TCPTP activation.…
<title>Irradiation effects in lead zirconate thin films</title>
2003
Lead zirconate PbZrO3 (PZ) and PbZr0.53Ti0.47O3 (PZT) sol-gel films with a thickness of up to 1.5 μm were deposited on TiO2/Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates by spin coating technique and heterostructures of the same composition as well as on Pb0.92La0.08 (Zr0.65Ti0.35)O3 (PLZT-8) (with a thickness of 0.4 μm) were pulse laser deposited (PLD) on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si. Observation of a typical antiferroelectric (AFE) double hysteresis loop in obtained PZ heterostructures at room temperature was attributed to the superior dielectric strength in case of thin film materials. The thermal behavior of dielectric permittivity e of PZ film reveals a maximum near 225°C on heating and 219°C on cooling. The higher res…

The manifestation of dipoles clustering in paraelectric phase of disordered ferroelectrics
2001
Abstract We predict the existence of Griffiths phase in the dielectrics with concentrational crossover between dipole glass (electric analog of spin glass) and ferroelectricity. The peculiar representatives of above substances are KTaO3: Li, Nb, Na or relaxor ferroelectrics like Pb1−xLaxZr0.65Ti0.35O3. Since this phase exists above ferroelectric phase transition temperature (but below that temperature for ordered substance), we call it “para-glass phase”. We assert that the difference between paraelectric and para-glass phase of above substances is the existence of clusters (inherent to “ordinary” Griffiths phase in Ising magnets) of correlated dipoles. We show that randomness play a decisi…

Review of photovoltaic status in a European (EU) perspective
2011
In the EU continent, a generation cost around 0.15€/kWh has been achieved [1]. Around the world, there is a mission to stimulate this green source of energy and it is believed that by 2030, PV will be able to deliver around 9 % of the world's electricity demands. According to an International Energy Agency (IEA) report [2], it is expected that PV will accomplish grid parity in at least 10% of the world by 2020. There was a significant 60 % annual growth in the grid connected PV systems in the span of 2004–2009 [3]. The present article will bring out the status & review of PV technology and the details of PV system standards as suggested by IEA. In the present paper, the main attention has b…
